I have come to have a high regard for Permatex oil resistant RTV. Pricey but the stuff sets up into a very dense neoprene rubber like material that creates a magnificent seal and is more resistant to the environment than a lot of other RTV's. Given how well this stuff seals and resists environmental damage that is what I would use.

Also- on the outer edges of roof stuff like vents, hatches, etc- Dicor Lap sealant is pretty awesome.

Marine hatches would be sealed with 3m 4000.

Love your Beetle! Going to be a nice hatch too. Nice job on the transition piece.

I learned about adhesive sealants. I got a bus with a blown engine and 3 brand new Maxx fans in the ceiling. I tried to salvage the fans. I got one out after a lot of struggle and it was pretty messed up. Never got the other two out.
I did a aluminum roof hatch and taped the seams with etarnabond RV roof tape. Unfortunately the hinges got in the way of the tape and I had a drip. Another lesson to do more research and use proper sealant.

butyl tape and lap sealant are the standard stuff for roof vents.

I have spent quite a bit of time perusing boat forums and such and came to decide on butyl tape. The deciding factor was this thread I came across:

https://www.sailnet.com/threads/bedd...yl-tape.63554/

There seem to be several other products that work well and if butyl doesn't do the trick, I'll work my way down the list. Here is the product I bought:

When I just the hatch mounted in the next few weeks, I'll report back.

Great article. I was leaning toward the butyl for sealing my fans or anything that may be removed in the future.

Thanks

Just wanted to follow up on my roof hatch project. I ended up using the Bed-It butyl and am very pleased with the result. It was relatively easy to work with but definitely has its quirks. Not something for every project but a good solution for this one. Has an outrageous stretch factor and it seems like it's going to last a long time.
