Making Dickinson H stove cap fit

Hello. I bought a mini cubic stove (wood burning) and pipe and then bought a Dickinson H cap only to find they are not compatible when using a silicon seal, only with the Dickinson deck fitting. Has anyone else had this problem and found a work around? Could you for instance cut the out section of the pipe at the top so that the cap will slide onto the inner section? Or does it need to be more air tight than that? Anyone use a Dickinson deck fitting on the side of the roof and have it work? Thank you.
