Alaskan Phantom
Hey all! I've been lurking through these forums for years and when I stumbled across a 1996 Gillig Phantom near me, I just couldn't resist!
$3000 later, I drove this bad boy back to my house and began the process of seat removal, cleaning etc.
I'm incredibly excited to convert this bad boy into a second home on wheels!
The bus was a city transit bus and it was the last of this model that they had in the fleet. So... they decided to throw on ALL of the remaining spare parts, manuals, etc they had for their Phantom fleet onto my bus! It runs excellent, has all of it's maintenance records, and is in fantastic shape!
I'm a pretty handy guy, but I know very little about these busses and, while I can't wait to learn everything, I'm gonna need a TON of help getting it all sorted out.
Hopefully there will be some patient, generous folk around here willing to help me get my project sorted!
Jason in AK
(My apologies for the rotated pictures, nothing I do seems to fix it...)

Welcome aboard Jason
Excellent haul of spares to go with a great bus! What powerplant has your Phantom got?
I'll be following for sure!

Wow, Congratulations on that score!! I was in the market for a similar bus and could have won an eBay auction for less than 2k. The thing that stopped me was the fear of that bus having almost 600k miles and the Voith transmission of which nobody knew anything about. Part of me regrets not going for it since it would have saved me some time with my current roof raise, but that's ok. Keep moving on in life!

It's got a Detroit Series 50. Which, my research shows is a pretty solid engine, but I'm completely unfamiliar with large diesel engines.

Was that actually in service in AK? I looked all over up here, ended up buying in southern Oregon. Driving our bus up the AlCan in 2 weeks, should be alot of fun, kinda jealous you found a good one here!!

We also have a Gillig transit Phantom with the 4-cylinder Series 50 Detroit. Ours looks very much like yours, except the stripes are a different color...and ours wasn't filled with boxes of spare parts! Nice score.

Have a great build! Would love to see it cruising this summer (You got a warm garage up there?) I have been up in AK 2 summers now, my 3rd is on the way in 2021. We fly in and out due to covid, and store ours in Anchorage
