That would’ve been an important thing to know before buying the vehicle. Welcome regardless.

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on the new bus. You mention being newbies; don’t worry, you’ll get plenty of “helpful” advice here (said with a slight whiff of lighthearted sarcasm).

Welcome to the site BAS.

In case you have not already discovered, the 6.0 engine is the GM gas fueled engine.
The "Duramax" is their diesel version, but not in a 6.0 size.

Hopefully you have the 6.0 gasser as, IMO only, it is more reliable and less costly to maintain than a diesel. Although the Duramax can be a good and reliable engine if it was maintained in its former life.

Good luck, and post pics if you can...

the 6.0 is a very reliable engine and the duramax 6.6 had some problems out the gate in early 2000.
have plenty of aftermarket support and experienced mechanics.
any engine good or bad always last longer with the proper maitenance.
my 2000 6.6 in my company work truck was already wore out when i started driving it because nobody else wanted to drive because it was known by the rest to just lay down on you and wake up when it wants to.
i knew that going in and my boss/owner new that when he told me to drive it.
it ran great when it ran. but if you turn it off for a stop somewhere or whatever it might start when you got back in and it might not.
thing had 375,000 on when i got it?
i kept my mechanics tools with me and the company paid for me to do my thing with it when it had an issue wherever it stranded me because no one else in the company had a clue.
first it was used when the company bought it and it never had any of the recalls performed on it as confirmed by the dealership.
had several experiences that i wont get into until i figured it out.
ended up being the hand pump primer (this has been changed) on top of the fuel filter.
cool idea cause it was easy to get to but a bad o ring design. once i changed that configuration i never had a problem with that truck again.
they put me in a new truck 2 years ago and one of my men is driving that truck daily and that duramax is pushing 550'000 now.
i did have one moment with it where i gave an option of start or blow the???? up.
and it started with a cloud of smoke 20' all the way around and after that i found the primer pump mess cause it left me at the motel in the morning a week later.
since then it hasnt missed a heartbeat.
good luck
