Hello from Northern Michigan

Just introducing myself, Liz and my husband, Gary. We purchased a school bus this month to convert for traveling in our retirement. We both are partially retired but hope to be fully within the next year or two. I can work from the road as I am in IT and have a contract that I remotely manage, so I could leave earlier. So we have a plan for converting the bus and selling most of our stuff.
We can't wait!

my wife is working at a hospital in newberry right now while i build a short bus for her.

Welcome. I also do IT work remotely. My plan is to become the youngest snowbird the world has ever seen, ha ha

im in telecom engineering here.. while I dont live or even really camp.. I did make one of my busses a mobile development rig for testing VoIP on the road and doing my software DEV with whatever scenery I choose!

I wish we had more remote capabilities back in the day. My husband & I have been working in the IT world before Apple Inc was started. My husband built our first home computer with a chip he ordered from Europe. It had a cassette recorder for "storage". I learned basic programming on that little computer and tracked our checkbook and expenses with it.

That is great. What technology (satellites?) did you use for Voip?

I have currently 3 cell carriers that i use.. my main router is a Mikrotik LTAP mini running dual SIMs.. I have a second router with another SIM in it.. experimenting with the best carriers..



but with starlink mobile being offered now, going to try that out and see how it goes..



im back and forth on what to do with Dishy.. whether to mount it to the roof or keep it portable.. if I mount it then it means I cant park the bus in the shade anymore.. if its portable it means I wont have service while driving.. have to figure something out that lets me do both

Why would you sell your stuff and travel in a bus? You gonna miss those northern Michigan winters. You should make room for snow shovels in your bus...then, when you start missing the snow, you can use them to build sand castles or something.

We have Starlink here at our home. We love it. It will costs us another $25.00 per month to make it so we can take it with us. Neither AT&T or Verizon do not work well here for us.

We can always come back for a visit, but I don't think we will miss it very much. I have lived in Michigan all of my life and have seen plenty of snow in my lifetime.

I didn't realize that they have lab Techs that travel too.

yes. it seems that every trade in the medical field has the choice to do travel.
when covid first started she got a phone call if she could go and we agreed.
since then she has been to wyoming just outside of yellowstone and got extended (3-month contracts ) and then alaska in the winter but they flew her out and provided housing and vehicle and they wanted her to extend but she had had enough of alaska in the winter.
then she went to michigan for three months and then picked up a 6- month contract an hour from the house and she thought that was great because she could help me with her bus on the weekends it worked and michigan called and said we need you back but for 6-months right out of the gate and name your price so she did and thats where she is at now.
the boys and i are going to fly up in january to visit for a week.

I'm up in Newberry if you ever get this far north. I could mail you a box of snow every year if you winter in the south... cuz I know you will be homesick without it!
