Hi - Just in planning phase...and a question.

Hi - I'm recently divorced and live in a ridiculously overpriced neighborhood, paying way to much rent. I have two teenagers that live with me every other week. My son is already 6 feet at 14, so I want them to have more space than a bunk bed. Oh, and a great dane.

Has anyone converted a double decker bus?

Your best bet is going to be a motorcoach as they are a few inches wider and have a much better roofline than a school bus.

Double deckers aren't realistic unless you get a non-running one and just park it. Keeping those on the road are expensive and height regulations make it difficult to travel much. I think Van Hool has made a handful and there are imported 1960's British double deckers but those are borderline impossible to keep on the road in running shape.

building a skoolie is expensive. I don't think people realize that the sub $10k budget builds are not the norm and that people routinely go well over that. with bus life you're trading high monthly costs for gobs and gobs of large expenses up front. keep that in mind.

The biggest hurdles I see with newbies are

(A) a place to store/work on it. I see too many that go out and buy a bus with ZERO clue as to where to park the thing. then you get the inevitable posts along the lines of "hey guys where can i find parking in downtown Los Angles for $100 a month or less!"

(B) time. demo'ing a bus and building it back up as an RV takes a LOT of effort. if you work a full time job, have kids and are working by yourself, it's going to take a long time.
