Red face I did it now I have an air door question

Has anyone come up with a way to secure the air doors? I have bought a 98 International 3800 DT466E. I'd really like to keep the doors but I don't want to use a padlock. I'd like to be able to lock it from the inside as well as the outside, has anyone come up with a solution they're using?

How cool is that - I'm in Prince George, Va. Thanks for that I'm picturing that on the inside of the door that overlaps on the outside - and a locking handle?

Sorry had to use Google Drive.

The "D" handle is inside, "T" handle is outside.
2 long rods get fitted to pins that rotate moving rods up n down.

This is where I first saw the Atlantic shed latch used, in a video posted by this skoolie builder.

My Bluebird has a factory-installed lock. I don't know where you would get it but it basically is a pin that is cable-actuated to the top of the door with a lock cylinder on the outside of the door. I have a latch on the inside to keep people out when the door is locked from the inside.

My doors are 2 panel swing outs. They overlap and are mechanically connected. If one is locked the other won't open.

That is similar hardware as I used in Elfie. Up-cycled from the junkyard. :smile. Made a cut in the lowest door step and bend the lip down as to get more resistance against wear through vibration.

Just a word of advice, When you start your bus MAKE SURE the switch for your door is in the open postion before stepping out while waiting for things to build up. I once started the bus & stepped out & a few minutes later was walking back & the door was about 3/4 closed & had to use all my strength to hold the door enough to squeeze thru, Another member a year or so ago did the same thing only his door was closed when he got to the door, I think his bus idled for a couple days while trying to figure out how to get in .

OMG I did this the very first time I started it and the air had to build up... Luckily I had the emergency exit unlocked. Good tip!

factory air door should have an override switch that "unpowers" the door so you can close it manually while the bus is running

Yes, on mine it's the same switch, 3 position, on the dash.

well my only experience with air doors was eagles or MCI's, the override switch was in the stairwell by the door

if you have an air door can you get underneath and let the air out of the tanks to gain entry?

They take a lot longer to leak down on my boss then the tanks. And if the engine is running I don't know if you could keep up with it.

true they probably have a check valve. I know on mine if I open all 3 tank valves i can definitely drain more air than the compressor can pump.. at least at idle.
