Just joined the fam!

Hello Everyone!

Just wanted to pop on and introduce myself I’m Meredith and I just bought a ‘03 Ford E350 minibus. Starting here soon I’ll be living in it full time as it’s already converted and has the capacity to do so. I’m looking forward to making it my own and adding some things though!

One part I’m struggling with is insulation. The guy I bought it from didn’t add any insulation to it and since I’ll be living in it, I’ll probably need some to survive the winter! My problem is A: there’s a lot of windows and B: it’s already built out and has stuff in it. Does anyone have any recommendations or ideas on what I could do to put insulation in without having to tear everything out? Obviously don’t want to have to do that… or any recs on how to temporarily insulate the windows for winter as well? Those things let in a lot of cold!

Anyway, I’ve enjoyed poking around the site so far and love seeing everyone’s ideas and builds!

maybe contact a spray foam professional. When they insulate a house, they cut small holes to spray/pump the foam into the walls. Could they do that on your bus?

Not sure if there would be enough room to do that, but that may be an idea to look into! Thanks!

Hi and welcome. If you know how to sew I would make some insulated curtains with a way to keep them against the window frame, snaps, velcro...whatever.
You also might be able to have some foam shot up from underneath the floor...not perfect but better than nothing. I'm not sure about the overhead but somebody around here will have an idea or two. Have fun

You hijacked someone else's thread on your first post to ask if you can list your bus for sale? That right there would be enough for me to ignore your listing. Lucky for you I don't matter.

Back to the original poster...

Meredith, our bus is (recently) very well insulated, but all our windows are OEM, and they're by far the biggest source of heat gain/loss. Our plan is to create insulated cushions that will fit into the framing surrounding the windows. Basically white fabric (or a reflective material) on one side (pointing out), a pleasing color on the other, and an appropriate inner layer of cushioning that also serves as thermal/sound insulation. I'm thinking elastomeric rubber insulation at the moment (like k-flex), but I need to make sure it doesn't have odor issues and will provide the comfort we want out of cushions that - when not in use as window insulation - are useful as... cushions.
