Just starting out

Hey Everyone,

My wife and I are starting our conversion story. Like a lot of people we have been researching different layout ideas, products, and long search for a bus which we got at auction. the realization hit me that we hadn't looked much into the legal aspect of insurance and title changing. Luickly I stumbled upon the Vermont way while googling and I found you guys here. What im trying to figure out now is the insurance part and what you guys did. We got a cutaway chevy bluebird 5 window bus. Thanks for any help in navigating this part.

Chilly

what state are you in? I just went through that process with my bus in NC and from what I have learned it's different in every state. In my case insurance was as easy as calling my current vehicle insurance company and telling them I bought a bus and need to drive it home and give them the vin etc. and they insured it 6 months liability for $130 as an RV even though they knew it was fully unconverted. title and registration I was initially going to do the vermont thing but I stupidly put yellow in the color and they sent it back(19 days later) so I went the legit NC route since I already had the lift and seats out. That went really smooth, call set an appointment with an inspector, the inspector checked the vin plates took pictures of them checked that I had the required 4 of 7 things your choice, none had to be attached in any way 1-heat or ac 2-cooking 3-fridge 4-ac power 5-propane 6-toilet 7-sink with running water(I had the first 6 just from camping gear)get a paper from the inspector right there on site after, go to the licensing agency and give them money and 2 signatures, get a plate and registration and the title will come later in the mail. It was actually cheaper then vermont and if I knew it would be that easy I would have done it this way in the beginning since technically the vermont thing you are supposed to get a vermont inspection afterwards and I never plan on going to vermont so I guess it's not really 100% legal.

I am in Florida, I will start trying to figure out my states requirements. From what I have seen on the road it shouldn't be too hard Florida has some pretty lack road standards.

The LS denotes the engine family, which is GM's 4th generation small block. LQ4 is the specific engine, making it a 300HP 6.0 offered in early trucks and SUVs.
