Smile Missouri newbie!

Hello all from just north of KC,MO!

I am in the early stages of seeking a bus. So much to learn! What I do know, I am looking at a shorter, diesel fuel bus that will be used for plenty of adventures but not full time living.

My husband & I (where I can) will be doing the work. Our budget for purchase is $5k. I believe I read that we should avoid buses from 2005 on, correct?

You can find some 2004 models with pre-2004 drivetrains because it takes 2 years to build a bus. The new epa regs went into effect in 2004. Clear as mud, right?

Given that you're looking at short buses, you're likely to see them with T444E engines. These are always pre-EGR, they didn't update for the 2004+. You're also likely to see Cummins 6BT/ISB. If you're looking at cutaways you'll see 7.3 powerstroke (based on the T444E) and GM 6.5 options.

I generally don't recommend those cutaways as they're built with lighter duty components but on the up side they hold their value even worse than a medium duty chassis bus.

5k is double what you should be looking to spend.

Thank you for the info! Glad to know we can get what we're seeking and stay well under the amount available for our purchase. That's excellent news!

I'm taking notes and soaking up all the knowledge I can
