Rebuilt or Remanufactured

Not sure but I think the bus a got has a 2017 engine built to 1997 specifications. Can anyone help explain this tags if I'm wrong?

That’s what it is, someone had the motor rebuilt by cat or installed a complete reman from cat, the tag just states that even though the engine and its serial number will depict a 2017 build that it only confirms to the 1997 emissions family .. likely a California thing

its a reman tag but it still s a older engine as the 3116 was not built in 2017. they took a old engine and remanufactured it in 2017 but law requires emission tags as to state what emission level it is. you can not put it in a newer bus than the tag displays

So like I thought. It's a Rebuilt 1997 engine that was rebuilt and probably installed in 2017. Am I correct to assume this?

Yeah, sort of. It was reman'd by cat in 2017. might have been installed in 2018.

But the gist is yes, it was reman'd at one point.
