Work has started on "The Cool Bus"
Hey guys, I've been using this forum for awhile as a resource for our conversion so I figured it was time I made an account here to post our progress from time to time. This project might be a bit of a change of pace for the forums here. It seems like the good majority of the fine people doing conversions here are couples, older folk, or otherwise relatively stable people with a good idea of what they're doing. Our project is a bit different.
Basically, we're a bunch of High Schoolers, getting to the point where we get out into the world and have to start adulting. A friend of ours lives on a relatively large property where his family keeps several old church buses as storage for materials, random junk, even livestock like chickens. Recently, his dad agreed to give him one of those buses as-is for him to do whatever he wants to with. Our friend group immediately decided we had to turn it into an RV, and after some debate, we agreed to build a Skoolie that the five of us can use for trips in the future.
Sounds like a recipe for disaster, right? Maybe. But so far, things have been going really well. My friend, the owner, is pretty automotively inclined and has checked the mechanics up and down. Our 30', mid 90's Blue Bird TC2000 is in fantastic shape for its age and runs like a dream. Plus, the work we've done so far over the three days we've gotten together to work on it is staggering. In that short time, we've cleared out the thousands of pounds of junk stored in the cab, cut out the huge metal frame the previous owner installed behind the driver, removed all of the trim, unbolted the front seats, and ripped out a good half of the floor. It's a long way to go, but if we keep pace, I'm optimistic.
The best part is the support we've gotten. When we started the project, we decided that the five of us working on it and contributing the big money would get a spot on the bus. But, from the little we've posted of the build on social media, so many people have come up to us asking to help work on the bus, just for the fun of it.
So yeah, five teenagers building a bus. What could go wrong? We've got a ways to go and quite a few hurdles. But we've got a pretty solid plan for how to handle this build, and for the hard parts like wiring up electrical, we're lucky to have a little professional help. If there's any interest, I'll put some pictures and other info on the build up when we work on it again saturday. Even if it's just people waiting for things to snowball and catch fire.
