1936 Chevrolet Master Deluxe Sport Sedan...new and slow project

she is 80 and fresh out of jail, Dad got served papers last August and said screw it and headed to AZ, he is a lot better off now, except for the $$ he lost

We built the car originally about 25 years ago, I helped when I could. He was retired from Military and needed a hobby, it has basically sat except for a couple times a year it was driven around town

We drove it around Saturday looking for a car for our son, she ran fine except for the hard starting, old gas and a weak battery

Started home and there was a vibration/Harmonic hum about 50 mph, told the wife I think the rear end or driveshaft is about to come out

15 miles later..clank,clank...we pulled over and took some pictures as we called the local tow company to rescue us

sorry about pictures, it was really humid around the lake

I had to stand on the roll back to get branches out of the way

dropped off

Good night girl....

I have a lot of maintenance to do, shifter came loose from tranny, hopefully clean threads and blue loktite and we will be back in business, and I have to straighten the bumpers out

Driveshaft is still in her, so I will put her on jack stands and check out u-joints and pull diff cover to check and if nothing else I can change the fluid

Picked these up last week and registered them on Friday

Ultra rare matched set of stamped steel plates, only year stamped TN plate that spells out TENNESSEE, all others abbreviate it TENN, so these are hard to find, a guy up the road restores licences plates

Great looking set of plates. I managed to find a fairly clean 1946 Texas plate for my bus. Since it was still considered the "war years"...they only issued a single plate as a way to reduce steel usage. Different states have different laws regarding the use of YOM (year of manufacture) plates. What is the story in Tennessee?

I was registered as Antique Auto already, it is a permanent plate with a 1 time charge of $30, it goes with the vehicle as long as it stays in TN.
As long as you can find a stamped steel plate from date of manufacture it can be used IF no one else has it already (since mine was a set, I had no issue)

I took them down, they took a picture of the tags, filled out an antique auto form using those numbers, I gave them $30 and they handed me my registration

1915 to 1956 where stamped plates in the shape of the state, very collectible for that reason (1957 was a square with state shape embossed)

in 1939 they started using the counties as a prefix 1-95 based on population

I am still kind of on the hunt for a 1936 TN FARM tag

Also on a side note, they "said" I could actually run any stamped tag post 1936; because it could of been issued to the car, I just think that is wrong

Nope, that is the trunk, several people have mentioned that, she has suicide doors that open to the huge back seat area, it is more like a mini limo than sedan

There was a chap a few years ago here in Houston who had a fleet of really nice vintage autos he leased out just for weddings and such. Made for some very memorable photos.

Okay an update

I got up this morning and was on a mission to find the noise that made me call a rollback.

Jacked up her rear end and put on jack stands, then pulled off wheels after spinning them in neutral... No noise, so I crawled under her with a few pry bars and u-joints checked out good

So I pulled diff cover (8.5 dia 10 bolt) fluid looked good, no metal and no chunks, and back lash felt good

Rotated assembly

No missing ring gear bolts, and no broken teeth, so I pulled carrier pin and spider gears, no cracks and not broken, everything spun good

So I pushed axles in and pulled c-clips and side gears, all good and axle bearings were good

So next was carrier, bolts out and a rag stuffed into pinion gear and a pry bar carrier out and bearings/races looked good

No pinion movement front to back....

Very weird at this point...a loud banging that was very loud and unnerving... Called the wife out to talk through the parts as I reassembled the rear end

I was like WTF? I felt and heard the noise...I was under her fixing gear shifter when I noticed the the washer welded onto the drive shaft for balance was whiney and ground up...less than .020 clearance (a small paper clip wouldn't fit)

So knowing how much a rear end can move while flexing etc....I grabbed cut off wheel on plunged up a 3/16 from edge and had almost 1/4 inch clearance....we test drove to town and twisted her pretty good...NO noise...so that is fixed

Next leaks and stuff

25 years and 3000 miles on new speedometer we installed

C-ya'll

well we went to the local fundraiser for HS scholarship, 70+ cars and we actually got top 25 with no interior or anything

so I wanted some tunes (these are low $$ parts...it will be listened to maybe 40 hrs a year

so this looked bad and so none 1930"s

stopped at local "antique store" and saw this

brought it home

1960 or 70's shelf liner...gone

test fit

marked and cut

another test fit (had to leave wood for hinges)

into car test fit

looks better now...just have to finish truck some more

Just for the record...just a year or so before that Chevy was built...you could still buy a .45 cal Thompson through your friendly neighborhood hardware store.
