549 engine replacement

Does anyone know where I might get a used 549 engine? The person who sold me my bus put pure water (no antifreeze) in the complete coolant system and it froze last night so all the freeze plugs blew but that didn't keep the block from cracking. So anyone know where I might get a replacement engine or has anyone had any success repairing a cracked block?

Thanks
A very irritated new skoolie

Lesson learned - never take anything for granted and check and double check the bus you are buying!!

Depends where the crack is. I've seen a JB-Welded Dodge 440 (in a Trailduster) go for years without problems.

Check with an old skool automotive machine shop, some cracks can be laced with irontite threaded plugs. Another place to look would be an industrial/heavy equipment repair shop that might have access to the irontite system.

I believe he's referring to an IHC 549 gasser. When International built a big block, they built a BIG BLOCK. The 549 was around about the time diesel started first really gaining popularity in the medium and heavy duty truck business. The possibilities of finding a 549 replacement block don't seem all that great to me.

engine

there is a BIG truck salvage in Wellsville Kansas called ironically Wellsville Truck Salvage, try them they have hundreds of acres of trucks and a few buses. I've bought a few things from them and they are reasonable. You could call any place that rebuilds engines, they have lots of blocks sitting around and would be glad to sell you one all rebuilt with your cracked one as a core. 785 883 4117 sportyrick
