Retired buses are like boats, a hole (in the water) you throw money into.

A month long SUMMER trip with 8 fresh out of high school buddies in a cheap as possible bus build would make a great comedy movie.

What is the total budget available to invest on this project? This will determine whether you're bus is merely a stripped out shell with sleeping bags, sleeping mats or cots, a camp stove, and a $hit/piss bucket (make sure that bugger is SECURE).

How many miles will you travel in this month long trip? A school bus will get somewhere between 7 & 12 MPG in most cases. One based on a van chassis might get a bit more though not much. A recent one month trip of ours (with a pickup and 5th wheel) getting 12 MPG used 650 gallons of fuel. At today's $4.00/gallon (Cali is worse) that's another $2600.

We purchased a very nice 21.5' fifth wheel (small for 8 guys though) for $5000 and bought a great condition (only maintenance needed in 45,000 miles has been brakes and calipers on one axle and consumables like oil and tires) F350 Diesel with manual trans for $6,000. That's $11,000 and we could sell the truck in a couple of days for $7,000 plus and probably $2500 easy out of the trailer (which we've used for about 5 years).
Now you wouldn't be able to pile 8 guys into an F350 so pick the most reliable wheels you have among you and split the passenger load between them. It's also going to be tight for sleeping quarters but bench seats in the truck could sleep two, if you go with a bumper pull trailer one or two more could go in the truck bed, and an 18-25' trailer should accommodate three on beds/couches and another two on the floor (you're 18, you can handle it)

It's a great dream, you can make it happen, but we have a rule in the military...... no plan survives first contact, intact.....you will have to adjust as you attain knowledge.
