Arduino motor controller doggy door questions

Ok, I've had a medical set back and I need to build Buddy an electric doggy door... lil feller pisses more than I do!

Today, I removed the front lower glass on my door, and have temporarily added a piece of Coroplast to fill 3/4 of the opening. I needed to see if Buddy would use the opening comfortably, and he's got no problem with it!

So, now I will build a filler with 1/4" diamond plate with a flat 1/4" aluminum slider... Already have that plan in my head and have most of the materials.

I would like to automate this with an Arduino controller and motor, But I have absolutely no idea how or where to start.... which controller, which motor, travel setup, etc.

think of it as a guillotine, and yes I will have visual contact with Buddy when I operate it!

can anybody start me off in the right direction? I'll watched a couple programming videos with smaller drive motors and registered at Arduino's forum without much results from searching.

Thanks!
