ATF fluid in the diesel tank?

The other day I was at BJ's and a large commercial vehicle pulled up to fill up on diesel. As he was filling it up, he stopped for a second to add a bottle of something directly in the fuel tank. When I asked him what it was he explained it was ATF fluid, and that the addition of it to tank doesn't hurt the engine, and in facts helps to lubricate things like the fuel pump.

Never heard of this before. Makes sense, or pegs the bullshit-o-meter?

my injection pump guy said he has never seen anything better than ATF for keeping injectors and pump clean. Only thing I see wrong with that is it's red and if you got a fuel inspection by the HP it would be red and you would be in trouble for using un-taxed fuel.

Hoi, that's a good point. So to use it I would have to keep all my fueling receipts, or keep all the ATF empties, or both?

Back in the day when they came out with ulsd, the lubrication property of the fuel went to crap, and a lot of old injection pumps suffered the consequences and were damaged.

ATF was a quick and easy way to add some lubrication back to the fuel, and it was pretty commonly available. The issue with it is that most atf has friction modifiers and other additives that you don't want/need in the fuel system. Today the technology is there with micro-lubricants and designated fuel additives that are much more up to the task. So most people should defer to using those, instead of a quart of dex3/mercon in the tank every fill up.
