Cooler basket?

You know how you always get a swamp at the bottom of your cooler by the end of a weekend of camping? There's food floating around in there that really shouldn't be. It's kind of nasty. Food gets thrown away as a result. It seems to me there should be a wire rack or basket type thing on legs that elevates the food about 3 inches off the bottom. Just pour in the ice first, then set the basket in and add food. Surely such a thing exists on the market, but I can't find it. Has anyone found something like this? Have I just given away a million dollar idea? Do I need to run to the patent office? Or can this be found somewhere online?

Thanks!

Run to the Patent Office DD!!!

I've not seen one designed specifically for such use, but I use a small dishstrainer for this prupose, one about have the size of the chest. Then I keep food on that side, and it leaves room for drinks and other can stuff (beer) on the other.

PVC pipe, cut in 3" or 4" sections. Get some of those plastic milk crates or soda crates. You can buy flimsy versions at stores. Put the PVC pipe "risers" on the bottom of the cooler. Set the crates on top of the risers.

We used to tent camp with a 120 qt ice cooler. Cryovac or vacuumed sealed food also works great. Zip lock baggies can leak on the sides.

I use stainless steel pans for this purpose. I have several of them at different sizes. Fill them 3/4 full of water, freeze them, then turn them upside down in the cooler, everything stays cold, and it takes a long time for the ice to melt. I sell shrimp alot and this works perfect for that purpose.

Just out of curiosity... Do you know what rock shrimp are and do they still sell them? When I was a kid, we had a friend who was a commercial shrimper. This was back in the days when the sea turtles would get trapped in the shrimp nets (old style of nets) and drown. My Dad would sometimes go out on the boat and butcher the turtles while the regular crew dealt with the shrimp and torn up nets. My Dad cut cut up a turtle pretty fast. He got "paid" in shrimp, fish and sea turtle (yummy). Lloyd would fish for rock shrimp at times. We loved them. The last time I had rock shrimp was at Red Lobster. On the menu as "Islandic Lobster". I think they are selling them now as "langostinos" but not sure.

BTW, Had boiled shrimp at the chinese buffet tonight!

Re: Cooler basket?

Great ideas from everyone! I just got back from yet another trip with stuff floating around in the swamp at the bottom of my cooler, so now I'm going to do something about it before the next trip! Not sure yet which of your ideas I will implement - probably depends on what materials I have at hand!
