Nearly 3500 in FL today.
Sundays are usually much lower, so this is a bit alarming.
Our county only had a few hundred cases total till about a week ago. Now its more than doubled and we're near 800. With virtually no masks in sight here I expect that number will continue to rise sharply.

It seems to be on the rise all over. In our county we had about 60-100 new cases a day before we left on our trip ... and it was steady. Now it is 180 new cases per day.

I saw this in a Celtic FC group on FB. Not covid related necessarily, but mental health is something that affects a lot of people. Especially in tough times.

Not all the 20-something's are that bad. I was finally able to travel to Utah to get some maintenance work done on my stepmom's house. I took my 23 year old, and my 13 year old boys to help. My 23 year old was always the first of us 3 to mask up when getting out of the car and going into the store. I even sent him into a couple by himself, and he was masking up as he was getting out of the car. Great example to the rest of us.

I got a message while I was gone that the positive Covid count in our county increased by 100% over the weekend. All the way up to 6 now. The three new cases were people who had traveled to Arizona the previous week.
I woke up with a bit of a scare yesterday. Churning stomach, feeling feverish, Rocky Mountain quick-step. Turns out I was just suffering from the Mexican food my sister made us for dinner the night before. That stuff burns going in, and coming out!!! All is good this morning. Feeling crappy and having some of the Covid symptoms did make me extra aware of where I was going and what and how I was doing it the rest of the day yesterday.
Do whatever you feel is necessary to stay safe. If family and friends don't like it, tell them to pound sand! They'll either get over it, or they'll die mad. But you will still be safe and healthy!

We didn't go over to Roxy's dad's place yesterday. We'd told him ahead of time we'd not be too comfortable NOT distancing since they don't distance and visit family members regularly. He seemed to mostly understand. They think we're extreme for masks and distancing. But he also knows we're doing ALL we can to protect ourselves and therefor everyone else.
They had 15+ people over there yesterday. I'd sorta felt bad not going till I heard that.
Told him we'd visit wednesday if he's cool hanging out 8 feet apart in the back yard.
Will bring masks, sanitizer, gloves, and clorox wipes in case we need to go inside to use the restroom. Hoping not to stay long enough to need that.

It's not easy going against the grain but you are doing well to stick to your convictions with this. The numbers in your state are out of control and only seem to be getting much worse so the likeliness of a chance encounter with someone infected must be increasing on the same line.
Do what have to for yourself and family first even if that means staying away from them.
Stay safe

Great that you got to spend some family time on the road with your boys!
Glad to hear you were just fighting the "black bean burn" and nothing more serious. Still I would take that risk right now for a good feed of traditional Mexican, my wife's a great cook but we haven't been out for a meal since Feb.
well it's 7:00 am on the west coast and the sun is shining so I'm grabbing a coffee and heading out to the bus to reset some windows.
Cheers

Thanks man. Will do!
One of the closest bars to out house has just posted to FB that they've had at least one employee test positive. They're shutting down "to clean and test". I posted to their page that until local businesses start wearing masks and doing real distancing nothing is going to improve.

No longer feeling shy about wearing a full face respirator on the plane if I decide to fly to WY...
Friends of mine in CO told me yesterday they observed a couple people wearing full haz-mat hoods when they flew a few weeks ago...

And we just had a fast food restaurant with a huge staff outbreak and our fantastic officials decided not to tell the public what restaurant because it's not fair and might impact their ability to survive( their words) and they shouldn't be singled out. what about our right to know?

My only regret is the bus isn't ready for use. That would have made the trip so much more enjoyable. As it was we were compelled to use the local eating establishments a few times during the weekend. It'll be nice when I can travel with everything, including the kitchen sink!! (And only the viruses I bring along with me!)

Travel does see to be getting more precarious as the days pass.
@banman ... I think using a full repirator is a GREAT way to keep safe while flying commercial.

I know of dogs that throw a fit when forced to wear a collar. I'd love to meet the pooch that will wear that for any amount of time without a fuss.

https://floridapolitics.com/archives...-icu-reporting
Now the governor is changing the way ICU beds are reported.
Quote:
Amid a surge in Florida coronavirus cases, Gov. Ron DeSantis‘ administration is changing the guidelines for hospitals’ reporting of intensive-care beds in the state Emergency Status System, or ESS.
In a phone call with hospital providers this week, Florida Surgeon General Scott Rivkees, who’s also the secretary of the Department of Health, said he no longer wants hospitals to report to the state the number of patients in intensive-care unit beds.
Instead, Rivkees said he only wants hospitals to report the number of patients in those beds who require what he described as an “intensive level of care.”
The change could reduce the number of occupied ICU beds being reported to the state.

Well, the view from afar out here in Western Australia is interesting.
The virus in Florida is spiking among the migrant farm workers, who are completely underserved by government at all levels because they are "invisible" in America. Doctors Without Borders have been treating them, for Christ's sake. They will no doubt bring the virus north through Georgia to the Carolinas with the annual harvest, and be equally "invisible" there as they are in Texas, California and elsewhere.
The virus in also blazing through the working poor (who happen to be people of color and latinx) because they are also underserved and largely "invisible" to the political class. This is exactly what happened in Singapore, where the virus was quickly tamped down but quietly raged among the Indonesian immigrant community who live "invisibly" five and ten to an apartment and do so much of the manual labor in the country. Fortunately there aren't millions of them.
It is fascinating that these underclass workforce populations, who turn out to be as "essential" to the economies as the food they put on the peoples tables and the garbage they collect from their homes are the hard nut of keeping contagion under control. Just wait until HHS has to come clean about the infection rate in the pens where they are holding illegal immigrant detainees, but I digress. Prison populations are a whole other kettle of fish unique to the US, managed "invisibly" by profiteers with no incentive to solve the problem.
COVID-19 is like a dye marker that finds all the cracks in a culture and shows what kind of society you really have. That's why Europe is doing so much better than the US in controlling the infection- because they don't have as much and many types of hidden populations that get so little in resources, health care and government attention. In Australia we complain often and bitterly about how high minimum wages are and how much it costs to provide everyone health care and decent housing and all manner of support and attention- but when the chips are down we don't have to worry that we have whole industries and legions of people who are structured into higher vulnerability and will spread the virus without a colossal (impossible) task of taking care of them under the worst of circumstances.
COVID-19 is like a UV light shining on the United States, revealing all the ways the country divides people, resources, wealth and everything else, and just how awfully many people are underserved and can't access the benefits of living in a wealthy first world country, despite the critical role they may play feeding its people and fueling its economy, with no real hope of protecting themselves from sickness and death. It would be a Herculean lift to make a dent in that problem, especially with a mismanaged and tanked economy.
Much easier to demonize them and blame them for everything, which is what I thoroughly expect the next political play will be from the federal, state and local leaders that have dropped the ball at every opportunity so far. Ignoring them was the play until now, but the virus is shining through the happy talk and bs ever more brightly. You're really going to have your hands full with these "leaders" if you can't get their hands off the controls in November.
The view from afar is discouraging, indeed. I feel for you all, as I do my 90 year old mom in Illinois who eats every meal alone, and will probably have to for a long time to come. They don't call these things plagues for nothing...
Stay safe & be well,
TomA
