No known underlying conditions with the 9 year old who died here. She was reported to be normal and healthy.

12,000+ new cases today. 123 deaths.
We took a drive in the miata last night. Every bar and restaurant were full. No distancing, no masks in sight. Looked as busy as I've ever seen.

It's the biggest mass case of denial, fatalism, and then I'd drift off into terms the forum doesn't approve of...
I've been deployed to several deeply religious cultures/countries both christian and muslim and found the "its G_d's will" attitude deeply troubling...
Like, this ferry boat is over-loaded, it will capsize, and many will drown...
"G_d will protect us / or G_d's will..."
When I said "but you don't have to over-load the boat!"
I was perceived as wasteful / silly...
But I guess it makes a certain kind of sense that the many folks who don't care about school shootings (enough to actually DO something) wouldn't care about a few kids dying from the flu either...
Stay Safe...

Check out this interesting new website created by a collaboration of Georgetown, Stanford, and several other universities. It breaks down the numbers into per capital terms and then makes predictions on what will happen if current trends continue.
Quote:
Georgia has about 2,833 ICU beds. Based on best available data, we estimate that 61% (1,728 ) are currently occupied by non-COVID patients. Of the 1,105 ICU beds remaining, we estimate 1,098 are needed by COVID cases, or 99% of available beds. This suggests hospitals cannot absorb a wave of new COVID infections without substantial surge capacity. Aggressive action urgently needed.
|
However, elsewhere on the page, it says Georgia is not likely to reach maximum hospital capacity (counting all beds, not just ICU) within the next 30 days at the current trends. These folks predict 6,000 new deaths in Georgia within the next month.
You can check out any state or county in the country and get a roll-up of all the stats in one place, with some context to understand what it means.

All I know is that if Whole Foods doesn't get potato chips back on the shelves, I'm gonna have to start taking this situation seriously. Maybe even freak out a little...
Runnin outta TP just meant a few extra showers. Runnin outta shnacks?!?! BAD!

The stores here are back to limiting/rationing meats and other in-demand items. And anything sold ground is around 50% fat now.
I know what you mean about snacks. I can't go without my YooHoo. It got pretty scarce for a while but I got a few 12 packs now.

I texted my brother the other day. He's in Ocala. He was at the dentist.
give me that the virus is real, but that people are messing with the numbers so that it looks worse.

I have a friend who has convinced himself that germ theory, germ caused disease, is a myth. It goes further as he has woven a tapestry of supposed conspiracies that would make a good thriller book. Maybe he should take up writing. I hum and haw not agreeing or disagreeing while trying not to get him upset and in a animated debate. I would be very surprised if he submitted to a vaccination. How many people know someone like this?

I don't mean to sound mean when I say this but...
I know people like that -- I refer to them as either work acquaintances, or cases...
My wife is MUCH sweeter than me and would point out (to me) if you ostracize such people they will have no source of real information, and no way back to reality...
If it's a real friend, I would talk to them, treat them the same way I deal with suicidal friends or cases...
Get them help, get them grounded...
Good luck!

Half of everyone I know at least. covid has brought em all out of the woodwork.
I LOVE a good conspiracy theory and a nice conversation over a joint. But this ant-science movement truly baffles me completely.

I’ll admit I do find it morbidly entertaining and sad listening to my friends conspiracy rants.
There was a interesting program on BBC World Service about a psychological phenomenon called Schadenfreude:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schadenfreude
A complex emotion indeed. There’s a lot of complex emotions emerging with this pandemic.
