I posted this story in a less-than-friendly form here earlier in the year, but deleted it almost immediately after regretting airing my dirty laundry online. But I feel it's important to tell it now.
This past summer, my father fell & broke his hip. 3 hospitals, 2 rehabs, and 1 month later he tested covid positive. For that entire time, no-one was allowed to visit. When I finally got to see him, it was in a covid-positive hospice home. He couldn't talk by then. I sat by his side during the day stroking his head, holding his hand, & wearing a respirator. At night I'd bag my clothes, shower, & quarantine a few hours while I slept. The day he died I went back to my quarantine room without being able to so much as hug my wife. I stayed there alone the next 10 days.
The hell he must have gone through I can only imagine. And the hell I went through I couldn't possibly explain. But anyone who writes this kind of death off as death like any other doesn't understand what this kind of death this is. I wouldn't wish this - neither my father's experience nor my own - on my worst enemy. This is something neither one of us will ever fully recover from.
Please take covid seriously. I don't care about your politics. I don't care if you're left or right. And this virus doesn't care either. Everyone's suffering. I don't place my pain above those who have lost their jobs, businesses, homes, or livelihoods. For all I know that will be our next big surprise. We're all living through our own 2020, and pretty much everyone's version is the suck. But it can be worse. You can lose your job and get covid. You can be evicted from your home while your SO's in a coma on a vent. You can lose your business and your parents in the same week. You could fall and break a bone and end up drowning in your own fluids a month later.
Stay safe, everyone. Don't let the fatigue of this year lull you into a sense of false security. Your chances of having your family's life turned upside down & inside out from this virus, as well as the response to it, are higher now than they ever have been, and the next couple months that's only going to get worse. There are so many wonderful people on this forum, so many we'd love to meet in person. Please do your part to stay around, stay healthy, stay afloat, and do what you can to help others do the same.

My condolences on your Father. Man, I'm so sorry. My heart goes out to you, man.
2020 has sucked. No 2 ways about that. 2021 HAS to be better, it just has to be. I have to believe that.

My condolences to you as well. I know you've been through the ringer.
Little comfort in that we're far from alone.
2021 promises to be a turning point.
12/31/21 I'm going to drink enough to go blind and lick doorknobs till I pass out.
This year I'll be watching M.A.S.H. in my undies.

Our condolences on your Father.
I had it back in April. Thought I was going to die, but felt like a real bad flu. I now know it was Covid-19, because of one particular symptom. I smell smoke when there's nothing burning, I also developed a dislike to the smell of some hand lotions, shampoo and soap that I've been using for many years.

Our condolences to you for what COVID has done to you and your family.
Here is a bit of good news. My wife and I contracted COVID-19 in late June, 6 months ago. After recovering, we decided to give blood since our area was getting low on blood. Our first draw was in the first part of September. They checked for COVID antibodies ... we both tested positive. We gave blood again recently (late December) and again our blood tested positive for COVID antibodies. This means (for us) the antibodies have lasted about 6 months thus far.

So glad you recovered, Sander. Thank you.
Thanks as well, Native. That's great news regarding antibodies. Any lasting impacts for y'all? (sorry, you probably covered this earlier in the thread, but I've been absent for a bit)

The first week was the pits. About all I wanted to do is lay down. The second week was only a little better. The third week was the true recovery week. It was about two more weeks where our DRIVE was still lacking ... not feeling anything specific, just did not really WANT to do anything. So overall, it took a ittle over a month for it to go through our systems.
No lingering effects since full recovery, at least that we know of.

Hubbard,
My condolences. What a terrible way of losing contact with a loved one.
My Mom passed away earlier this year in the Netherlands and we were unable to attend the funeral.
Just like any war, this episode will stay with us for a long time.

She was totally stoked to get it. They skipped her on the first round a week or two ago.
We'd been counting down the days till she got the jab!

I'm 800 miles into a road trip to south Florida, currently in the Everglades. With 100 gallons of fuel, and plenty of food, beer, and water, we haven't had to see anybody up close. We briefly went into a couple of ranger stations, but we've been outside other than that.
My sister and her fiance had it early on and recovered. My 80-year old aunt and uncle are currently sick but in the early stages. My buddy lost his grandmother and my dad lost his childhood friend recently.
Soldiers have to follow all the hand washing, social distancing, disinfecting and mask wearing guidelines. Out of my 50 Soldiers and 700 students, only 1 tested positive. All of post goes into two week quarantine right as I'm finishing my trip.

Saw them showing lines in Florida on the news this A.M.
Did you do the drive-up thing? Was it a long wait?
Do they monitor you for anaphylactic reactions, or just get the shot & go?

I didn't get one yet unfortunately.
65+ first come first serve. We got 5000 doses for a county with 386,000 residents.
My mom got hers at work, she works in the local hospital.

I am actually a registered nurse by trade. I quit just before my first child was born last November amid a fall season with many unusual cases of viral pneumonia. Many of my colleagues got sick in November and December I myself was ill for 3 weeks in December and was given a presumptive positive because there was no testing available. when coronavirus officially hit I didn’t go back to work. We didn't need for me to.... several months ago my cousin who owns our Family shop started having trouble because of the lockdown. With an infusion of my 401k I am now part owner and I work there when we cant afford to pay an employee. Luckily Ive been a semi professional mechanic all my life because my family has always owned shops I even have ASE 1-8 though they expired. Until recently I didn’t know anybody who knows anybody who tested positive even though I live in the SF Bay area. Now there are cases all around me. I have a bad mitral valve and severely scarred lungs from burns in Afghanistan. We will see how it goes. Good news is I've decided To convert a school bus into an RV.

I got sick badly in January. I could barely breathe and almost went to the hospital. Was real bad for about 3 weeks. Every single covid symptom.
An antibody test many months later told me nothing. But I still feel a bit weak and short of breath since then.

Drive-through testing sites are available. They take cash. $65-$100 depending on age & occupation. Totally doable for people who have lost their jobs (/sarcasm).
Most places that take insurance will test for free if you don't have it. But you can't use this option if you do have insurance. They take your social & enroll you in the federal program for the uninsured. Better to be uninsured it appears.
Depending on the site, rapid and/or PCR tests are available. But the rapid tests in the first 3 places I've checked are 'limited availability".

our tests when we had the drive up places was $20 county residents $120 for out of county.

Same with me. I had a cough so bad for a month so my doc at work gave me a script for the “mini pearls “ not sure what the official name is. Had the antibody test in march and it said negative. But I’ve not felt 100 percent since. Especially winded too.
Who knows?
