Does anyone know what this is"

This is the back of my injection pump. The tube coming from the motor has been broken off and crimped. Any ideas what that is for???

Does that crimped line come from the intake manifold? Seems i remember reading something about a diaphram inside the IP that controlls fuel based on how much pressure the turbo has created....I don't think it would be related to a waste gate.....does your turbo have a waste gate?

probably an intake pressure signal line that helps to control smoke on acceleration until the turbo gets spooled up. replace/repair the line and inspect/replace the diaphram in the housing on the pump.

Here are two more pictues. Click the link if you want bigger pictures. The crimped line comes out of the head. I finally got the picture thing figured out, thanks to you guys. See, my mama didn't raise no dummies. Well, actually see did, but we won't talk about my brother right now.

What part of the head is that? My Ford is all backwards with the turbo on the driver side (actually on the exhaust manifold) and the intake on the passengerside. It could still be a pressure signal from an intake port.

I have an oddball line like that, but mine is fuel. It actually pulsates back and forth. I have yet to figure out what its purpose is, but I do know that I shouldn't have cut it.

Start the bus up and see if you can feel air either being blown or sucked out of that fitting. That might be a start. Does the bus smoke a lot under boost or right off idle before it makes boost?

My engine is a Cummins 8.3, the tag says 6cta. These pictures are taken from the right side of the bus. Mine is a rear engine. The tube is in the middle. When I get a chance, I might drive it over to a Cummins mechanic.

OK. Went to the Cummins dealer today. I thought my 8.3 was a big deal. They had a 5.9, an 8.3 and a L10 all lined up. The 8.3 was small compared to the L10 and they make bigger. Kind of takes the wind out of my sails when I says it's got an 8.3 Cummins.

Anyways, I told the guy behind the counter that I had this broken line. I pointed it out on one of their engines. He told me that it was an AFC Sensing line. I think he said that stood for air/fuel control. I asked if that would cause smoke during idle. He said maybe. So he sold me that line and a fuel filter for about $45. I will start by replacing the line and fuel filter and go from there. You guys were right.

Now comes the really cool part. When he brings me the line and asks me if it has a banjo fitting like this. I told him, "I don't think so". Then I said, "Do you have internet". "Yes", he told me. So I had him pull up the Skoolie site and go to the gallery. We both looked and sure enough, it had a banjo fitiing. Is that cool or what?

I replaced that line today. Afterwards I took the bus out for a 20 mile drive on the interstate. It seems to have helped. The true test will be a steep grade. That won't happen for a little bit.

CrazyCal since you got the same engine as I do, could you point me in the right direction where to find some info about this beast.
I looked on the cummins site but could not find anything. Mine is a 1996

I need to know what the reccomended oil is and how much of it, but in reality I would like to find a repair manual for this engine. CD or bookform.
Can you help me? or anybody else?

As far as engine oil, there are only three that I would consider. Chevron Delo 400, Shell Rotella and I think Mobil Delvac?? I happen to hate Exxon/Mobil right now, So I would try the other two. About the service manuals, sorry, I have nothing for you. You might try calling one of the school bus dealers and see what they have. Good luck.
