Driving my Detroit 8.2 across AZ mid June...

I'm making my first family trip from KS to AZ. I don't think it'll be too hot but I'm doing an oil change before I leave.

Should I just stay with the rotella 15/40 or use something straight?

Stick with rotella?

I'm going to flush the system too, and keep my eye on the temp.

No need to blast me about the engine, I know, I know... It's got 76k miles and runs good. So I'm sticking with it and babying it until my next build (don't tell my wife I said that). [emoji3]

Rotella 15/40 is fine. It’s up to you whether you go with a synthetic or conventional. I went with conventional because of cost and the amount of miles I do (or lack thereof) justifies it.

i have the same motor in mine and at 200,000 miles it still runs like a top.
good maintenance before you go and you should be fine.
i would worry more about the transmission temps on a long road trip?
hope you have a good trip and have access to old school mechanics that know the 8.2 if you have any issues.
they are few and far between around here and you gotta have special tools to mess with the fuel rails.
wish you luck and successful journys

Thanks Jolly.

Is there an easy way to keeping track of the temp of the transmission. Maybe a wireless thermocouple?

Would like to keep an eye on that.

only way i know to get a true fluid temp reading is to cut a tee in the lines and add temp guages to the dash.
i dont think a thrmo couple would read the actuall temp. exactly because it would also be reading the temps of the metal it is attached to.
what transmission do you have? some have tappings in the transmission for temp guages.
maybe other members hear will chime in and offer more experienced thoughts?
without having computers on our busses we have to go more old skool than just add it into the computer.

Hey Jolly,

Made it to AZ and back. I didn't have much concern since serviced the transmission and finding it out has the MT643. Not the 454.
Ok appreciate your experience and feedback.
