electric scooter hybrid....sort of

I"m planning to go to burningman once again this year. I'm fatter, older, and more out of shape than i used to be. Bicycles are the primary mode of transportation at bm while mostly any powered vehicle with a seat is outlawd. I would estimate that on average i ride at least 15 or 20 miles per day out there. Not only is it more physical excersize than my body is used to , but the air is also thinner being at 4K feet above sea level. Every year when i'mthere I say too myslef "next year i'm gonna make a scooter to get around"

Here are the objectives for the scooter:

Cheap
room for 2 passengers standing
At least 10 mph cruising speed on flat ground
electric (QUIET!)
reliable
super long range At least 20-30 miles
room for honda eu2000i geni and 40 amp battery charger to make unlimited range.

I bought a pair of brand new 300 watt killmorgen 24 volt motors with built in speed controller.

I plan to use a 12 speed bicycle for the rear drive so i can find the optimal gear ratio

For battery power i want a pair of 12 volt deep cycle marine lead acid batteries...(heavy, but cheap. )

Dude, I don't mean to be obnoxious here, but if you spent all the time and effort you are going to spend building this thing riding your bicycle instead, you'd be almost in shape for BM. Not that building it for the sake of building it is not a worthy venture. I'm just suggesting that your current logic and justification may have a few holes.

300 watts@24 volts=roughly 8 amps
Group 27 deep cycles=100 amp hours to 10.5 volts roughly (@20 hr)
10 mph/30 miles=3 hours

3*8=24 amp hours*2 for the pair=48 amp hours comsumption or just about right for not killing that battery bank though you will be running it WAY down given start up draw, etc.

Mathematically it works out. Are you sure those motors are going to cut the mustard when it comes to getting that thing moving? I would think that keeping the gennie off it would help with the weight issue. More weight=more power consumption. My biggest concern would be the ability of a pair of .4 horsepower electric motors to move something that heavy to speeds of 10 mph.

Calculating out your quarter mile with a 500 lbs vehicle including driver and .8 horsepower tells us you could get to the end of the track in just undre 50 seconds at a top speed of about 30 mph assuming prefect driving and infinite gearing.
