Flat Tow Slight Issue

Flat Towing, don't be this guy.
This is what happens when you flat tow and forget to take it out of 4wheel/low.

At freeway speed the motor was turning 50,000RPM with a 6600 red line.

$30k in damages to a new Jeep.

AIUI, old couple in a mega dollar RV pulling a new Jeep. Probably won't be a big deal for deep pockets.
I can picture an old couple, just retired. Let go traveling honey. Buy an RV with zero experience driving an RV let alone towing behind it.

I watched an RV trying to flat tow a midsized pickup truck and they were only in the parking lot. As they began to pull away, I saw the rear tire spinning backwards and squealing all the way. The noise made them stop, but they never even got out and looked, started to pull away again, and this repeated three times. Never got out to look, I was waiting for them to so I could get out and let them know but they must have shrugged it off and finally left with that pickup truck tire smoking the whole way I could see. No doubt it blew by the time they hit the roads but moving slowly in the parking lot apparently they just didn't grasp what was going on. Can't save some people from their own, well, inexperience let's call it.

Things happen, people have bad days. It's like when you forget to shut off the burner on the stove when you're done cooking. I recently forgot to switch out of 4wd while driving on the dry paved highway after getting out of some mud...it happens.

With stuff like this, though, it's nice to have a checklist or a partner to double check the setup. All it takes is one slip up to ruin your day or your Jeep.

I have a pre-flight check list posted on the left "A" pillar. I check it EVERY time I move my bus.

I saw a Smart car that had been flat towed several hundred miles with the trans in park. The front wheels had been ground down to the spindles and both oil pans had been rubbed off. Why the thing didn't catch fire is more than I can understand!

Ol trunt and check lists

I am working on an owner's manual for my bus. There are check lists in the book that I am teaching grand kids, must be done according to the book - every time.

Like on an air plane. I hope to avoid forgetfulness. The tough part is actually using the list, instead of getting into the awful of habit of "it is in my memory".

I think more planes fall out of the sky because of not following the guidelines.

Then there are the times where there are not guidelines for the situation.

Like that air plane that landed/crashed in Iowa that was flown with throttles and very very limited other resources AND five people in the cockpit that day.

Turns out the guy on the throttles has spent time experimenting in simulators trying to fly an airliner on throttles only.....just weeks before this accident. There were no procedures on how do to this at all.

The safety protocols for cockpit communication was rewritten after this incident, to reflect a better way to manage an airplane. The five in that cockpit managed something that could not be replicated in flight simulators.

check lists even help keep problems from happening in operating rooms, but were very very uncommon until recently. There are still surgeons that resist the practice.

Reminds me of "Flight" with Denzel Washington.
