Got a bus - Yay!

Just made it home after a 200 mile maiden voyage - and I didn't wreck it or kill anyone or anything!
  • 2002 Freightliner with a Thomas body;
  • 10 window/11 rows of seats;
  • Cummins 5.9 which starts right up;
  • Allison 2000 overdrive transmission;
  • Governed at 60;
  • Only dropped to 51 at the top of a substantial hill;
  • Air brakes;
  • Air door;
  • Air-ride rear suspension;
  • Spot of rust poking through the paint at the top of one of the wheel wells;
  • Bit of rust near an exhaust pipe joint;
  • No body damage other than the wheel well acne;
  • One moderately small underbody box;
  • Good tread and age on the tires;
  • Spare tire included;
  • All service records since it was new;
  • Sold to me by a very kind and helpful bus mechanic who flips a few buses a year;
  • Cost me $2800.

Good start. I like the sign,I just wrote it on duct tape on the side. Sounds like you got pretty good deal.

if you can wait awhile, last I knew dapple was going to gut it.. do a minimal build, use it for a moving van and then sell it.. maybe you could have that very bus!

dapple:
looks like a great bus you got there!!!

Mangus - are you anywhere near Spokane? I could pick you up at the airport, and you could have a bus this fall. What color would you like me to paint it? (Seriously: we have to paint, and if it helps with the marketability of the bus at the other end, we'll paint to suit.)

We're likely to move this fall. We might keep the bus until July of next year to use for a road trip to a family reunion. But we have no place to store the bus, no desire for the nomadic lifestyle, no Idaho insurance, and we will be of limited means once we arrive at our new home. Now, if the wife has a change of heart that's another story... but at this point it will be on the block once we unload.

My mechanic finally had a chance to look over my bus. It has a bad oil leak where the lines enter the bottom of the radiator, but that's all he could find that bothered him. Said it "sounds tight" (a good thing, I understand). He also loved that it has bright pink transmission fluid.

My job is to go through the maintenance records and find what can be found about transmission servicing, coolant system servicing, replacement of U-joints, and replacement of gear oil.

He also chewed my rear for not waiting until the glow-plug light goes out before starting. Sigh...
