I'm LOVING this truck.
Tomorrow I'm gona change the oil and filters after work.
It gets compliments everywhere I go. Like the bus, maybe even more. Its cool that used surplus vehicles get so much street cred.

I get more thumbs up and compliments on my busses than I ever did on my hot rods or show cars

Lower exceptions for these surplus? If you have a hot rod and it isn't Barrett Jackson ready then why did you bother? Just a theory.

IDK, some folks like supermodels in magazines, some like the girl-next-door.

There's a lot of truth to that. The guy that is going to drool over a Ferrari isn't going to get near a bus conversion. The nut jobs that like homemade wouldn't keep a Ferrari if you gave them one. Guess it depends on where you're hanging out as to how many compliments you get.

its the unusual factor... its not the conversion part.. drive around in an old fire truck or a nice restored stake-side hay truck, or a nicely done school bus. and it grabs people's attention..
sure supercars and $$$ anything grabs attention.. thats just the average person's fascination with the "other side"(ultra rich) life in general..
and nice hotrods and classic cars draw attention.. the crowds at cruise-ins show that.. but its the every day.. out and about in something unusual, along the freeway.. thumbs up from passing cars.. or fascination at a bus or old commercial vehicle amongst people at parades or walmart parking lots..
the idea that someone tricks out a bus instead of a 57 chevy...

I changed the oil and filter today. It fought me a bit. I actually had to buy a filter wrench.
What came out wasn't awful but its been in there at least a year. Everything else was full and fresh looking. I added a quart or two of distilled water to the radiator but that's all. I'm going to get an aluminum 4 core and new water pump for it in the next few weeks. Its not overheating but the radiator is original to the truck and looks dreadful. No leaks, but it needs to be addressed before any problems can arise.
Looking around underneath while I was under there its definitely going to need a steering stabilizer and rod ends.
Good thing everything for this truck is cheap and easy enough to find.

You should try keeping a vehicle for a change. You're getting damn good at doing all this PM but then you go and sell it down the river afterwards.

So far I've got twenty bucks in the truck.
I just don't ever get sentimentally attached to vehicles anymore. When I feel the time is right I sell em and move on. Best thing is I'll never have another car payment after the first of next month.
I pay less for my vehicles than most folks I know pay for the down payment on a plastic jellybean!

Keeping vehicles is no fun.. I’ve had my dodge truck 2 years now and has 7000 miles and I’m ready for it to be gone!
The busses I just do stuff to make them new again like upgrade drivetrains add stuff etc.. once I run out of stuff to do I’ll sell those too lolol

Let me know if you're bored of any of em yet.
I've kept a couple vehicles for a really long time. I still own my very first car.
I may hold on to this truck a good while, but who knows. I do REALLY like it though.
Today I'm ordering a master cylinder and brake booster as well as a new steering damper. Those will set me back about $140.

It's not the $20 I'm talking about. It's the constant oil changes, replacing belts, hoses, changing water pumps, etc. It's like you own a shop only you're not getting paid. Don't you have any other hobbies? Don't you have a school bus or something to tinker on?

You need to find a hobby too!! I don't find any fun in buying vehicles. Hope the Golf lasts 300k.

Dude... its maintenance that keeps me from the side of the road.
Do you not change oil on unknown history vehicles you just spent 5 grand on???
Do you leave 20 year old waterpumps with one foot in the grave on an engine when you could replace for $35???
The bus is cool, but I need a truck to work, get groceries, and do all the things that make me ABLE to own a bus.
I appreciate the concern, but I look at PM as cheap insurance. REAL insurance, not some promise from a corporate entity.

Maintenance is key to a long and happy life. And if you don't have a record of when something is due, it's due NOW.

Aye! Especially when its a cheap part that's 30 years old and the life of the engine depends on it.
The oil was a no-brainer since I've got tons of the stuff. I buy it when its dirt cheap.

No I get the need for PM and fully approve of that. As for a $35 water pump, yeah I'd let that sit but then it's been a long time since I've had a RWD engine where you can actually get at the damn thing without going thru the muffler.
It just seems you are always changing the oil. You're not even getting 3k miles out of the cheapo store brand before you're changing the oil on the next one because you flipped yet another. It's great for the next guy but I'd just be tired of doing oil changes.
Different strokes and all. I'm just mostly busting your balls.

Wrong Gulf. I have a TDI Gulf. 300k miles will keep me from having to buy a new car for awhile.

I only change my oil like once a year on everything. You've seen me change oil on buses which is really rare on this site! You've got the wrong idea totally. I do change my oil but no more than anyone is supposed to. I change synthetic every 5k but conventional every 2-3 thousand. I do own a LOT of machines that require oil changes, but that's cool I like machines.
I don't get fussy about brands. I just change it like I'm supposed to and I've had no oil related failures ever and I have had vehicles last a really long time.
How old is the oil in your bus?
