How does the engine diagnostics button work?

On the dash I have a button marked engine diagnostics, but it doesn't do anything when I push it. It's a 1996, does anyone have any ideas?

I think one thing it does is to shut the oil change light off. I thought it was something along the lines of turn key to on position and press 3 times and on the third time hold it until the light goes out or something. I'm sure it does more than this but I don't know what.

Hold button down,turn key to ignition,release button.The yellow check engine light will now blink out all 3 digit active codes.The red stop engine light will blink and then all 3 digit inactive codes will be displayed.
Turn off ignition and press the switch down,turn on ignition,pump accel pedal 3 times.this will clear all inactive codes.

Cool, you obviously know what this is, can you explain what the codes are or what they mean? How can I use this? Thanks man.
