This has been veerryy educational. Sometimes the bus just isn't big enough...

RE: Awnings

We do not have an awning. In NM it is hard to have one due to the wind.

The one on the Class C got broken when we left it opened up (but lowered like we always did) and ran to town for 30 minutes to get a part in Rockport TX. The awning was facing North and the wind was coming off the gulf from the South. We don't know what happened but the thing was trashed when we got back. It ended up breaking an interior spring or something. Anyway, it no longer rolls up by it's self. We did have it tied out (screw in dog tie outs into sandy soil with bungie-shock-corded rachet straps) like we always did too. We have seen a lot of awning damage to RV's. My fav is when the awnings were weighted down with cement blocks. After a strong thunder storm with high winds, they make pretty holes in the sides of RV and on the roofs.

If you get an awning, try to get one with the metal "alumashield". It keeps the awning from being damaged when rolled up plus it seems to have more flex to help the awning fabric stay attached.

We will end up with another free standing pop-up canopy with side panels. We used one for the popup. It was more convenient. For us, picnic tables are hardly ever in the right place for a vehicle attached awning. Or the campsite just doesn't want to fit the awning opened up, usually it needs to be shifted by a couple of inches. Plus on our bus, we would not be able to have the awning over the entry door. So we will be building a heavy duty canopy frame from metal connector parts I found online. I prefer to have a canopy that I can leave up rather than have to close it up every time it rains. Also I prefer to have a canopy that I can just replace the material top with an affordable replacement (or a different one). My thought is a good solid framed low gable peak (enough to shed water) and put a solid tarp on half for rain and a shade cloth tarp on the other half for extra shade. We have had several store bought canopy frames get damaged and were then unusable and seen even more damaged in various places after strong winds. So the EMT conduit frames sound like our best bet. We had to replace part of a cabin tent frame with conduit and we know how well even the small diameter stuff holds up.

Been thinking, and a separate screen room/canopy definitely makes more sense, other than storing it. It doesn't have to be attached to the bus, can be put up where it fits, can STAY UP while you go dump tanks or run for fuel or whatever reason you need to move the bus, is cheaper, ...

If you reverse the second 1, you could have someone steer the last set of wheels like those big firetrucks! And you would never have to use reverse!!
