Instagram, YouTube, etc.

Good morning!
I need to understand something, about the Instagram, YouTube etc. links. Why is it better than posting a picture or a story here once in a while? Is it about getting as many followers as possible? To gain sponsoring for future builds/trips? I clearly miss something here, as a lot of people are actively sharing their wonderful experiences, like painting a bumper, traveling from Kansas city to Wichita or eating potatoes. Is it because it is easier to share these slices of life with friends and family? In this case, why bother sharing on Instagram AND YouTube AND ...
Thousands of skoolie owners choosing to publicly (Instagram, YouTube) show their newly-purchased-still-not-converted-bus or the pair of pliers they use remains mysterious to me.
Once again, no judgement, I just like to understand the world I live in Not so long ago, we used to discuss and have a beer around a campfire with people boondocking in the same area. Now, it is more like "Hey, nice rig. Do you have an Instagram?" No, I don't ...

Thank you ABBus
Well said, I choose not to subscribe to all those social media platforms, I can waste enough time here.
Stay safe and enjoy your journey.
Cheers

I don't get it either. We are now a society where everyone is kept exactly at arms' length, no closer nor further. Media platforms allow one to present their life/lifestyle in a completely controlled manner, you see what others want you to see and that's it. Who wants to expose the less-than-photogenic aspects of their life to the mob, after all...

Social media often seems indistinguishable from exhibitionism to me at times.

People have the fantasy of becoming popular on these sites and making ad money. It's a hard fantasy to resist given the generally low quality of videos that become popular.

Youtube is mostly full of skoolie fails and hipsters.. "Insta" is sorta that but even younger crowd. So lots of self absorbed folks taking glory shots of everything they do.
Just my 2 cents.
This site and a bit of FB is all I look at as far as skoolies on the web.

Oops. Thread went askew. I saw 'closet exhibitionist'. Just meant to click the "Like" button.

Where we live, it is completely legal to simply be nude in our own yard. Its also totally ok with us.

Being in my yard,
don't be posting pics of my closet.

The secret
On a Blubird TC 2000 with a 5.9 Cummins and a AT 545 together remove the right side engine mount and hoist in engine. ( or remove)
This will cause great happiness to all near and far.
Replace mount, bolt both sides down and install front mount.
Go home early and drink beer.
The picture with the hoist is holding up the front of the engine after the 2 rear rubber mounts were snugged and installing the front mount.
Could not get that engine installed picture to stand up
sorry.

Now , the "El grande" punch list. Wiring, supplemental trans cooler, hook up trans, driveshaft etc...
The kind, wherever you look, you see something else to add to the list.

I just figured, as long as you guys are gonna call all YouTubers narcissists, I might as well own it! Seeing how YT is the most fun thing I do, I guess that makes it FUN being a narcissist!

I tend to agree with all the naysayers about YouTube/Instagram/Facebook etc. because I'm socially lazy and I'm a closet introvert. I could easily spend a week or two by myself with nothing but my own thoughts and be perfectly content.

But that's the thing - those are personal attributes that make social media not a good fit for ME. For all my friends and acquaintances that are social butterflies and are fulfilled or have their batteries "recharged" by social interaction, those social media sites make perfect sense. It's an easy way to get your social fix from the toilet seat at 3am. I guess I'm just trying to say that humbugs like me (us) will never understand fully, but it's what some people need, so let them do their thing.

I'm not on Facebook and I've never been to the 'Gram as far as I know, but I must say that I'm very thankful to all those people out there that post stuff on YouTube. Sure, there's endless garbage on there, but there are also gold nuggets. Maybe all YouTubers are hoping to get a following and make loads of money, but some of the best/most helpful videos I've seen only have a few hundred views. Either the posters are deluding themselves about their popularity or they just genuinely want to share and help others. I think and hope that it's the latter.

Another point: when or if I finish my bus ("if" because most people give up and statistics apply to all of us), I'm not going to give tours to random strangers. Our bus will be our home and if you came up to me on the street and asked to walk through my house I'd tell you to get lost. But I do understand that people get legitimately excited, interested, and maybe even inspired when they see something as unique as a converted school bus. So, when the time comes, I'll post a YouTube video walkthrough for all YOU random strangers that highlights the interesting bits without showing off our dirty laundry or private life. In my mind, that's the sort or thing YouTube is good for.

Agreed. I think it is how YouTube was meant to be, before all the "channels", etc. ... Looks like some people have to post something almost everyday, as if their real life is a draft and the achievements are the videos they post.

It is an error to project yourself and your way of thinking onto others, I promise you this is very much incorrect. For better or for worse in both cases.

That is not even close to what he did. Recognizing a pattern of behavior across a large cohort does not imply universality, this is a strawman.

Recognition of nuance is largely absent from online conversation... perverse incentive structures heavily favor approval seeking behavior over truth or reason.
