Downhill with a 545

We run 6% grades often with a AT545/3:54 diff. I am an ex pro. bus/truck driver and use this technique:
Crest the hill, pick a target speed. I usually pick 55 and run in 3rd. At the target speed I brake firmly until reach my other target speed..usually 45. Very very steep, 40. I release, wait to build to top target and repeat. 4 ways on of course.

No drama.

i agree with 2kool, for the most part, no drama.

But the high mountain passes here in Colorado are full of hairpin curves, switchbacks that drop down to 15mph, and some long open straight aways that are 40-65mph, then back into a 15mph curve.

trying to moderate between 15mph for a curve and 40mph for the straight away is gonna smoke those brakes fast. i've done it. i'm not a bad driver. it takes some practice to come down well. knowing the road and practice makes it safe.

i'm still alive so the buses are certainly forgiving.

we could have a few different classes in the downhill race: the 545's, the retarder's, and everyone else.

Oh goodness what a terrifying thought to be inside a bus loosing control. Ot would be like a missle!

I bought this guy last night. 1998 6 window Amtran with WC lift. Hydraulic brakes. 4.10 rear end is nice, and nearly new tires. Not a bad deal at all at 1625!
YOU convinced me the 444/545 would be ok. I figure for what I'm using it for it will probably be overkill and last forever anyhow. Yep. Its all YOUR fault my addiction has gotten worse!!
How many buses do you have!! LOL - great little find! Looks like it has the high roof as well!
