Lions and tigers and bears

I have been wondering and even though i have looked. I can find nothing on this subject. Has anyone had any sort of run ins with critters big and small or nutcases while out boondocking? Ive had a few run ins with black bears and that was no fun.

Oddly enough my friend who lives 5 miles away had a bear sighting in her neighborhood this week! Lots of Rabbits where i park... cute fluffy bunnie rabbits

My wife and I spend out summers working in Glacier National Park. We use bear spray (Counter Assault is the brand we use). It is essentially really bad-ass pepper spray in a larger canister. Would also work for the nutcases!

We have encountered some bears while hiking, but have never had to actually deploy the spray. If you make noise, the bears usually don't want anything to do with you. UNLESS you are encroaching on a feeding one or a mama with cubs. Then they *might* get aggressive. Usually they will just bluff charge you though...

The bears i encountered were being feed by a crazy lady, they had lost all fear of humans.

We've had two encounters with black bears in northern Michigan but one was more interested in our dirty dishes than in us, and the other one just wished we'd turn off that damned million candlepower light. We've also seen 4 coyotes and in every case they were hustling away from us. Other critters were raccoons, turkeys, groundhogs and deer.

All were more a photo op than anything else.

I've had to deal with a few mice...turns out a soft tootsie roll molded around the bait plate of a old snap trap works very well and is reusable.

With the MASSIVE amount of development going on, our local black bear population has literally been forced from the last bastion of refuge in the area. SO now that they're wandering neighborhoods hungry, we've decided to open up hunting for bears.
In ten years the news will be running stories asking why we don't have bears anymore.

Thats happening everywhere. I know a lot of places trap and try to relocate the wandering bears.

It used to be very uncommon to see bears around here too much. Even more rare to see bobcats. Now they're all over the place. As are birds of prey, and snakes. There's pretty much been this major heartbreaking exodus of the last remaining wild animals in the Lake/Orange county area. They sacrificed an actual "bear santuary" type area for a turnpike entrance and a bunch of expansion.

how big of a gun do you need to carry to knock a bear down if it is coming at you?
assuming you cant take that just one perfect shot?

My son reminds me that you don't really need a gun for that. Just make sure you camp around people that are slower than you. Nature will take it from there.
