Got my bus home yesterday. 300 miles no problems. IT used 3/4 tank of fuel. It is going to need some odds and ends. New radio and some other maintenance items. Guy said it had new tires. Date code says 2012.

2012 is new in geological time. Maybe that's what he meant.

LOL
Seriously, 2012 means they were made in the year 2012 (last two digits are the year). They need to be replaced. I feel sketchy with my 2017 steer tires but they still look good. My rears were 2014 models and I replaced them in 2021.

The year on the date code is 2012. I don't remember what number the week was. IT's been in a shed all its life. I can't find one weather crack in then at all.

@rossvtaylor started a thread here recently on the subject of how old is too old for tires (unfortunately I can never find anything on this site, maybe Ross will link it if he sees this). The conclusion seems to be that nobody really knows, so you might as well keep driving on your 2012s - Boy Scouts are pretty easy to replace.

I 110% Agree, Ross did an amazing job on this video. I learned a lot and I've been running buses commercially for years.

I get it licensed. They gave me the same plate as a car. I would have though it would be licensed like a pickup or a truck. I almost didn't get it done though. The head DMV lady walked by while we were doing paperwork. She said it cant be yellow. So they get the book out and it says it cant be "school bus yellow". Some quick thinking I asked what the title says for color. It just says yellow. Don't say school bus yellow. I say its been painted there is over spray on the black stripes. (There actually is I did not lie.) I say the past owner must have just painted it yellow to make it easier to hide the school bus yellow Because he had a Farm license on it. He couldn't do that if it were still school bus yellow. She agreed with me. Asked if the stop sign and flashing lights were removed. They are. OK then here's your plates.

Thanks, guys, and good for you Mr. Farmer Sir. I respect what you're doing and why.
On a side note...after seeing MG's "@rossvtaylor" note...one of the things that I think is lacking here on the forum is that ability to tag folks and get their attention. I'll mention that to the weasel.

Everything I ordered started showing up today. Everything except the hitch and the brake controller. Hitch isn't due for a a couple days but the controller should have came with everything else. Except for one problem I forgot to put it in the cart. That's ok because were getting ready for planting so it will be a little bit before I can work on it. Now that its warming up there is a very distinct mouse smell that needs taken care of sooner than later.

I’m always worried about mice getting into my bus. I’ve considered trying to park it long term at my in laws house in the country but I’m almost positive I’d get mice out there.

I put down a ton of poison all around my shop last fall since it's located in farm country a mile away from the county landfill. Found one dead one this spring which wasn't as bad as I expected. No nests. I've always had good luck using bounce dryer sheets inside my popup camper to keep the mice out.

I found some old bottles of BAN-QUIT in my wife's aunts basement a few years ago. I believe its an old Amway product. I mixed some of that up and sprayed the crap out of everything. We will see what its like this morning. The stuff smells pretty good.

if the date code for virgin or a recappers code reads as 2012 which means it was made the 20th week of 2012. 0616 would be 6th week of 2016. if the date code is altered or illegible do NOT buy

Started working on the bus a little bit. Got a new radio and antenna installed and replaced the shocks. Replaced the leaking sight glass on the overflow tank.
We are planting right now so time is limited but I need to have everything done by Fathers day weekend. We are going to South Dakota to the black hills.
Still need to get the hitch welded on, install the wiring and the brake controller. I want to pull the belt off and check the idler and tensioner pullies.

Why did you opt for a weld on hitch? Just curious. It seems like there’s lots of bolt on options if you can translate the frame hole measurements to a known hitch model.
