no, although most automatics will not shift until the right rpm's depending on load. However those who regear the rear end to high for the power available will end up lugging. I am not saying changing rear end gears is a bad idea, it certainly is warrented sometimes.
The other thing that can happen with automatics that will cause it to shift way to soon is a TV cable that is broken or not adjusted right. This will lug the engine. Having said that not so sure modern automatics even have that anymore? The computer does everything.
