Unless you’re in one of these biker gangs I’d opt to keep my bus normal looking. Think War of the Worlds, when he had the only working vehicle he became the target. Just try to stay inconspicuous, if at all possible in a bus conversion. Yeah sorry my way isn’t as fun but that way I’m not a target.

Snow plow bumper up front, B29 style gunnery in the back. . I had a chance to get a backfill blade off a big ole John Deere excavator about a month ago. Bent all to hell it would be a great 600lb addition for the bus of the apocalypse.

Kevlar sheets

So I find this funny but this is my first comment here. I FINALLY Got a SKOOLIE. My buddy is using kevlar fiberglass on his 40' sport fishing boat. I've seen it on race boats. I'm not sure how heavy it is or how thick it would have to be.

Even if it could only appear the part, it could be a fun build. A 4x4 verson with super singles and maybe camo paint.

Foam filled tires? This would allow you to remain mobile. I’m thinking that the tires would be a major target. Lexan sheet protection for incoming bullets.

If you can’t move, you’re a sitting duck.

I seem to recall seeing a few video clips of skoolies on what looked like 48" super swamper tires or something. I don't remember ever finding any info on how they did it or if the videos were even real. Maybe it was just a stunt. But... in certain situations it might be useful to be able to roll over curbs and midsize cars easily. Apply the fast and light mentality to the bus, instead of slow and heavy.

Another idea, which is a very good idea because it was on TV, is to just get some extra buses to keep handy for use as disposable bugout vehicles for you and up to 72 of your closest friends. Anyone who doubts that this is a viable plan should look up Season 1, Episode 1 of the show "Doomsday Preppers" on National Geographic. I distinctly remember which episode it was because that was the last episode I watched before deciding I had learned all I needed to from that show. The folks with the buses had these drills where they'd wake up and load the buses with a load of food and ammo and family members and neighbors, then convoy out to the fortress bunker they had made out of stacked shipping containers. On the way, they'd practice circling the wagons with their convoy, then hiding behind the buses and shooting at the potential enemy forces who would be approaching from all sides. This is probably a good idea for any of us who only have the time to stockpile a few buses but not build anything with them.

And, in the Mad Max world, those are the people you'll inevitably come into conflict with.

Thanks for maintaining a bunch of buses to attack creepers to come kill you for...

Or while you were playing circle jerk with your buses I moved into your compound before you got there -- thanks!

coming back to sand bags, fill them with silicone oil/sand. It acts like a modernised asphalt armour. Also relatively easy to pour into voids.

tyres wise, the 3 piece metal type shoot flats would be the pick. From the NATO armour sphere from memory.

a screaming detroit 2 stroke would be necessary to go full mad max. Wouldn't be fast but the noise would be good.

I'm over in Australia, how are things over there?

Smile Solar charged (plug-in) hybrid bus

Fuel, like toilet paper, can be hoarded and eventually run out. I've thought that buses should be multifuel (diesel, which they already are) plug-in hybrids with more battery and than fuel tank.
How great would it be with all that roof space to have your solar panels charge your drive batteries that runs high torque electric motors?

Hey, I have a vintage pair of alpine star boots like the ones Jim Goose wore in Mad Max if anyone likes that sort of thing, I would be willing to let go of them for a fair price.

I'm pretty sure, solid skid steer wheel/tire would go on a bus hubs without too much trouble. I'd bet some air filled Ag tires would be pretty bullet proof too. .. I keep thinking the Landmasters from Damnation Alley would be pretty close to perfect, or the Antarctic Snow Cruiser from the 30's
