Sounds like your main gearbox needed to get re-shimmed (they have a small bit of preload on the shafts).

it certainly needed something - I think I must have been one of the very few that used the 4 speed transmission - most of the miles on that old beast were acquired driving the 5 miles between the sawmill and the railway siding, so there was really little point in using the 4 speed trans - when I applied for the job I was driving a 56, 2 1/2 ton Mercury ( Ford) flat deck as my personal vehicle - the boss saw me navigate into a restricted parking area without hesitation and must have figured I was an experienced truck driver, so he hired me to drive the Mack - it was a LEARNING curve - lol - when I gave my notice a year later, the boss made a personal trip out to the mill to ask me to stay on - offered me $0.05 an hour on top of the union wage ( $2.05 Hr ) and added if I told anyone about it he'd "fire my ass out of here" - he was known as a tight wad, and could be very difficult to deal with, so I took it as a compliment
