Manual transmission with a 2 speed rearend

Does anyone have a manual transmission with a 2 speed rearend? What is it like to drive? Does it help with mileage?

So you don't have to go low to hi as you run through the gears?

no. unless you have a heavy load, you can leave in hi range and start off there. in my dads old service trucks 50 yrs ago which were loaded to 28k, we had to use low range to start off with = in the gas engined ones. you can easily tell if you have to use low range on take off... in the 2 skoolies with international v8 engines, mostly i used high range.. exc in places like hills...

A 2sp with an auto. That's cool. Does it help with mileage or hills.

Re: Manual transmission with a 2 speed rearend

dad had an old 70's F500 and one place i worked for had an international van truck both with two speed rear ends. Dad's truck he only used it for 3rd,4th,5th to split high/low and could only get 80km/hr out of it down the highway cause it was so heavy (crane truck). the Int van truck i drove the idiot that trained me didnt even know how to drive it.. he would just put it into low while driving down the road then was like "what's that rattling sound??"....

Keith, did your bus come like this or was this an upgrade? I have been looking at buying a BB with a cummins and auto but was worried about the gearing and highway usage.

there's another thread here discussing this that says shifting the rear gears on the fly breaks it- i'm taking it to mean that means you have to start off either high or low from a stop

You can shift them on the fly.
The people I work with can break any thing, they haven't broke a 2 speed yet.
