More bad news for CA owners

Just another disappointment for many Bus owners and others in California.

I saw the attached on another site. It appears many will have to repower their vehicles with a 2010 or newer engine.

Probably only applies to commercially-registered buses. Skoolies that are titled as motorhomes would be exempt I'm guessing.

This really hurts the lower-class school districts and the smaller contractors though.

We really need the fault to let loose and let Ca. slide into the ocean. There was a time I was proud to say I was a native Californian, not anymore. That state is becoming truly farked up.
I assume my RV/MH does not fall into a bus category, but doubt it.

You need to convert to a motor home and change title to MH and then you won’t. In fact, you can think of right now as being the perfect opportunity to scoop up a killer deal on a sweet bus with low miles because it’s not worth adding the particulate filter.

And just to include complete information, this only applies to vehicles with a GVWR greater than 14000, so most short buses are exempt.

I see a huge market of used rust free buses coming up soon.

I didn't read your document, but I don't think I really need to. The current governor of Oregon is trying to bring in new laws that will also have the effect of forcing many people and small businesses who cannot afford new or newer vehicles to buy one. If she gets her way I plan to move to Nevada, at least on paper.

I think Nevada will among the last states in the US to be struck by the Political Correctness Fever. But I also think it's inevitable that eventually most historians will lump people who liked messing around with old vehicles in the early 21st Century in with the Luddites. I think I know what I'm talking about because my post-graduate training is in history, and I've always been interested in what can be seen as the sidestreams and backcurrents of history.

This is the year. The CARB initiative to add particulate filters to all diesels has been going on for years and they left the buses for last. School districts had many years notice. The bigger districts and the large transportation contractors also were able to secure grants and loans to take the sting out a little.

The best deals I’ve seen were fire agencies updating their fleets and letting their old ones go for really cheap. I suspect that most of that is done, but for those looking for a bus there could be a few stragglers.

Says there's an exemption for vehicles that drive 1000 miles a year or less. How hard would it be to slap a fake odometer over top of your real one?

Well, besides the fraud, lying to a government agency and probably the cancellation of your insurance if you are caught go for it!
Also, as others have mentioned it is for commercial vehicles, not your bus, which is registered and insured as an RV.

don't drive over 1000 miles in California - they have no say for any where else

Why would it fall into a "bus" category when ( I am assuming) it has been retitled and is insured as an RV? By the way, Faults don't work that way! Now, maybe it would be time to chill a little bit and Lighten up Francis. Native back to the late 1800's and still very proud of it

I read about the 1000 mile rule and they are being really strict with that. IDK how they are tracking, but they are.

And why would you want to try? Just convert to RV and never worry about it again.

many ( most? ) people converting school buses don't have the money, let alone can afford, to do a conversion like that - it's not a viable solution for most -

sorry, misunderstood your meaning and couldn't delete my post - I was replying to the idea of R&R a new motor

I would not want to actually try, not least because I'm not in CA. I was just wondering whether people ever do that, especially given how unreliable school bus odometer readings are anyway.

So, I know people here don't like the post-2003 engines because of the costs and reliability problems associated with the emissions control systems, but what effect do these actually have on emissions? Like, is my 2003 bus spewing 10X as much as a 2013 bus?

My 1995 smokes pretty good for the first minute or so after I start it. The smoke quickly disappears after that, but I think it's good I have no plans to spend any time in California.

Yes they are. They made a motorhome loophole. I’m guessing you can thank the RVIA for that.

MH Title

For those following along that might go down this road, it might be useful to know that you don’t need to rely on a DMV employee to make the determination that you’ve achieved the basic requirements for the title change. You can use a private service that can do that for you. I called one of the certified companies that does it and talked to him at length. They come to you. He said he’d charge $125 to do it.

I also contacted the CARB Diesel Hotline and confirmed the motorhome loophole.
