I need to replace the actual lock on my outside storage latch. My problem is, I can't figure out how to get the key part to unscrew. In the close-up picture you'll see that there's a tab on the threads. I'm not sure if this is supposed to be a lock mechanism to allow it to not be unscrewed, or it is what the lock is screwed into. I've tried using a screwdriver to push on the tab to see if it would spend loose, like a nut. That didn't work. I tried unscrewing the lock from the outside, yet they're designed not to be able to get a grip on them. Is anybody ever removed the lock from one of these latches?
That's a spring washer. It has a tab on top and the bottom that grab the thread to prevent the washer from backing off. Pry them off carefully. I broke a tab removing mine.
I don't have keys for mine, so I will replace them with ones with nuts instead.

You might have an easier time just drilling out those four rivets and replacing the whole latch. They're not all that expensive - I think the replacement I bought was $12 or something.
Huh. So do they just put that washer on and then push the lock mechanism in and those tabs hold the lock mechanism in?
I'll go ahead and gently bend the tabs up and see if I can get the lock out.
I'll do the same thing and replace it with one that has a nut.
If I can't get it then I'll do suggested and drill the rivets and buy a whole new mechanism.
Thanks!
Put the lock in it's hole, add the rubber gasket, then slide the washer over the flat tab onto the threaded section and push it on. The lock itself is available in many places. United Welding Service (UWS)has them for $12.
