Schoolbus scrap value?

No absolutely not I would never scrap a bus. But this subject interests me because I heard from the gentleman that is selling two 40’ international diesel pushers with computer issues near Ocala florida on facebook marketplace atm, that his local scrap yard will give him 1800$ for each and they will let him keep the old rims and tires. If this is true that could explain why it’s hard to find a similar bus cheaper then that for parts. Ideas? Thoughts? Gripes? I hate scrappers. It breaks my heart. By the way I have a 40’ bluebird all American with a commins 8.3 isc and Allison 3000 6 speed electronic trans I’m parting out. It’s in punta gorda, florida.

Just scrapped a pair of them. Both 40 ft bluebird AAFE w/ c7's. Was given 2000 each.

Trade in value was pennies with the c7, and the district didn't want to deal w/ gov deals or private sellers.

Lol, that was my backup plan if my blind bidding ended up winning me a dead/dying bus. I won a 77 passenger 04 Freightliner with Cat 3126, for $750. So far it looks to be in great condition (for a rust belt bus) and the tires have great tread! I'm getting it back from a mechanical inspection this week and hope to clear the seats and floor out quickly, then I will really know what I bought!

A year ago scrap was down to $3.50/100lbs. Today my local scrap yard is at $10/100lbs for autos, and $9/100lbs for scrap. My bus empty was just under 2k lbs. So $1800 is about right. I had a bus I scrapped for $1200, after paying $900 for the bus.

That’s a killer deal!!! What auction sure was that? I over bid on my bluebird winning bid was 2500, but I had 1000 in Copart fees and Autobidmaster too. I was in a bidding war with guatemala lol I guess they’re feeling the effects of the covid hipster schoolie crazy too lol

It’s nice that you made a quick 300$ but DONT DO THAT!!!!! These old busses are a limited resource please try to get parts into the right hands before you scrap them. I want to save them all! Trying to buy land to make my bus paradise on lol

Engine had no oil pressure, had some body damage, basically really used up. I only bought it cause it was 22 miles away and it was $900, mid 90 BB with Detroit engine. I was able to retrieve the wheels and tires the next day and still got the $1200. I now have a free set of wheels and tires. I didn't really have room to store it and I'm not into the time and aggravation of parting one out.

I feel the need to weigh in about scrapping a bus.
School buses are large. Not everyone can place a school bus in their yard. A lot of counties/cities/neighbors are not tolerant about dead vehicles.
If you acquire a bunch of dead school buses and place them in your yard, expect a visit from code enforcement. Years ago I had problems with code enforcement in Santa Cruz County over my three vintage Willys (a 1951 station wagon, two 1952 pickups). They weren't in the way, I thought they were cool. Compound that to the size of a 35 foot school bus and I hope you see my point.
Not all buses are worth saving! Yes I scrapped a Crown. But first I removed all useful parts and sold some of them. It was picked up with a tow truck and went to the scrap yard on a tow truck when done.
My parking spot for the parts bus was limited in time. It could not stay.

Yes I agree that space can be very expensive and shook buses require a lot of space. I’m trying to buy some rural lamd where it seems to not matter wish me luck because if I get it I’m going to save all the busses! Not long ago GovDeals had large (30-40) groups of busses on one bid, you haul 'em away. Entire bus boneyard for sale. You'd need several acres, preferably secluded and dry, to store them. Seemed like a decent deal for someone interested in parting them out.

Good to know I’ll keep an eye on Gov deals! Thanks. It’s a vicious cycle I bought a bus and realized I needed a parts bus to complete it and now I’m looking for another parts bus for my parts bus. Where, oh where will it end.

metal is high right now.. just helped a friend part out an IC RE that the Maxxforce DT blew its EGR coolers.. the bus was purchased with less than the scrapyard is offering him to take it now.. since it does still run and drive he drove it to thye scrap yard so no tow.. but we took all the A/C systems, the webasto, I think he even swapped the good tires off it to his other bus.. 2k to 2500 is going rate right now for a full size bus..

I remember when I scrapped the Crown about 2005 I got about $225. In 2016 I scrapped my first dump truck, a 1963 R190 and got about $200 from the scrap yard. Last year My son took the engine block from my Crowns original engine to scrap and got about $20. Must be a big change in scrap prices.

metal is really high right now.. if the computer chip situation doesnt improve really soon though we are going to see metal prices tank in a hurry.. not only just for cars but for anything that uses metal the bottom may fall out.. even construction.. I know of a couple of building projects being slowed down right now as they cant get the computer network equipment nor HVAC control equipment to run the buildings.. so the construction (read that as steel beams) is being slowed way down.. whereas a few months ago the rush was on to get it built built built.. so if you have metal to scrap then scrap it now.. used car prices are still high but with the delta covid surging offices are slowing down their return so demand for cars is startign to level off.. ie if you have a car to sell then do it now ..

I have 1 I am considering just junking now, I do not want to but I can not find a buyer and can not hold it! It's a 2002 international... new starter and batteries, electric is ran with inverter, water is ran with a half bath and kitchen sink already. It is titled as a motorhome. Took beds out to redo and then had medical issues. Wanting $3,000.

Scrap at the salvage yard is currently paying $7.50/100lbs. At 25000lbs it would pay $1900

check with your local salvage yard, they may want all oils and fuel drained.
