Serious Stuff! Naegleria fowleri

Brain-Eating Amoeba Shows Up in Louisiana Tap Water: Here’s What You Should Know

Quote:
The amoeba Naegleria fowleri, a brain-eating microorganism, was recently detected in the tap water of St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana. This microorganism can result in a condition known as primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM), with devastating results.
The often-fatal microorganism can wreck havoc with the central nervous system of those it infects. Nearly everyone who comes down with the infection dies.

Thankfully infection is rare. Still very nasty stuff, though.

Rare indeed, but it's still out there

this Arkansas girl is one of only 3 survivors in last 50 years....Kali Hardig

Kali Hardig, 12, contracted amebic meningoencephalitis at a Little Rock, Ark., waterpark in July.
She is only the third known survivor of the deadly infection in the last 50 years.

Here in Fl, about every year someone dies from this. Always from swimming in warm, shallow, stagnant water.
