Tell me how to protect my computer

My firewall that comes with my windows xp slows down my computer. What will be a better one firewall I can download and use for free?

You can also try Comodo Firewall, I use it on my computers and it works great.

Comodo is free and you don't have to renew it every year.

I second Zone alarm...all my computers use it and I set it up on those computers I work on for friends..also us AVG for anti-virus, you have to dig a bit, but they do have a free version

Zone Alarm or Sygate get my vote. Does your router have a built in hardware firewall? Those tend to be some of the least intrusive I've ever seen. I'm a little curious why the Windows firewall is slowing your computer down. It didn't take much to slow down my old 450mhz Pentium 3, but XP Pro SP2 and the firewall that comes with it didn't hurt it at all. Is there something else going on there?

But.

Willmiller posted the exact same question on a totally unrelated board that I happen to
