This one just came up on Marketplace

I've kept track of several engines you folks have spoken to me about. This one I had not seen. I also think this person may be a member here.

1991 FORD B-600 BUS
VIN: 1FDNJ65P6MVA27333
6.6L Ford-New Holland I6 Diesel
185,275 Miles

Is this one worth chasing?

They're good, but they're not all that common anymore and finding repair parts for them could be challenging. The 6.6 and 7.8 ford/new holland are also known as the ford brazilian engines. Do a search and you'll likely see that most view them as reliable and dependable.

As pete said, avoid lucas girling brakes. And I'm here to tell you that there's more to a bus then just the engine. The right transmission and rear axle gearing can more then make up for a 2nd tier engine choice.

Okay! The owner responded and no idea if these are those LG brakes..

How can we tell if they they are? Is this part of the VIN?

If it's an older model ford bus with hydraulic brakes it's almost a guarantee it's a lucas girling system.

So, does it have hydraulic brakes?

Yes it does. How old is older... 1991 is not that old to me. LOL
Is there a way of defining? What is it about the LG that shows how different it is?

Now I'm very curious what LG did that makes it that you don't what. And of course what the repair/replacement is involved?

Replacement parts are tricky to secure. The "system" is also known to fail prematurely.

Anyone that has worked on British automobiles or motorcycles references Lucas electrics, (and Ozzy Osborne), as being "The Prince of Darkness"!

There are threads on the site that go into more detail on brakes by LG, if you are interested...
