Hey Timbuk I have a few questions about your sheet metal cancer repair.

On your body cancer sheet metal work are you using a Mig or Tig?

What thickness sheet metal?

If Mig;

Are you using .023 wire or 0.35? Dual shield or solid?

Are you gaping the metal? If so are you using panel clamps, magnets or vise grips? Or are you butting it?

I've done plenty of welding but hardly any sheet metal work and never any Tig. I have a Harbor Freight 110 Mig (It's really just a wire feed stick welder, no capacitor) and a Lincoln buzz box in my shop.

Any tips will be appreciated.

Hey Smitty I have a galvanized metal tray from the AC shop that I need to patch a hole in and I need to solder a copper nipple to it for a drain. Do I need to use silver solder to weld the copper fitting to the galv? Can I use a propane torch the same as I use for sweating copper pipe or do I need an iron? If so can the iron and solder be purchased at Lowe's or Home Depot? Any tips?

Thanks in advance guys.

Thanks Smitty that sounds like exactly what I needed to know. Yeah, that green smoke that comes off the galv when cutting/welding it will make a guy sick as a dog it he breaths it.

Sure, please do post any tips you can about repairing sheet metal body cancer.

18 to 20 guage is fine.I butt weld my stuff,some guys use a flange tool but but weld is nicer.Mig weld is what i use .Do not use flux-core wire as it reacts to the bodywork.I get my piece as tight as i can,i use 030 wire solid with gas.THE BEST RESULT IS WHEN YOU TAKE YER TIME TO FIT THE PIECE THE COLD BEER COMES LATER

Yeah, I'm finishing up a ton of odds and ends on the truck. I think I have all of the fluid leaks sealed up by replacing several gaskets and I almost have it tuned the way I want it to run. My wife stripped the interior cab down to the metal and installed rubber matting over the entire floor, duct taped the seams and covered the entire floor and firewall and half way up the rear wall of the cab with new felt automotive insulation. That was covered with new carpet and we now have a nice quiet comfortable ride. It still needs quite a bit of work that will get done a bit here and a bit there over the next year or so. It's a fun driver. I also want to change that front grille to a stock chrome one as soon as I find $300.00 or so laying around.
