TN Stop Sign Law

Hey guys/gals.... do I need to remove my stop signs in the state of Tennessee? No easy answers anywhere. Thought maybe someone had run into this.

I don't know if they need to be removed, just need to change them from red with the word stop in it. I plan on keeping mine and putting something else on it.

In most states it is illegal to have any operating school bus equipment on a vehicle that is no longer a school bus.

It is even illegal in some states to have a vehicle painted National School Bus Chrome Yellow that isn't a school bus.

The odds of any cop pulling you over and citing for that sort of violation is slim to none. But why wave around a clear violation if you don't have to do so.

It is PC, I took the stop sign off and made a triangle yellow turtle crossing sign

I changed my lenses out all; yellow up front and all the red to the rear, that makes it compliant regarding light color front and rear

and since you have moved you lens colors around, I use the flashers if there is an accident etc, they are just hazards then

If the flashers still alternate from side to side ( wig wag) they are still illegal

Most jurisdictions regard red flashing lights as illegal on anything except emergency vehicles and non-SPAB school buses. This law obviously is full of holes and is enforced either unevenly or not at all, but it could still be a reason for an over-zealous cop to be difficult with you. You may want to check your state's vehicle code and see what it says.

FYI, my rear red flashers are now repurposed as extra high-mount brake lights, but they only work when the fog lights are turned on. Is this 100% legal? Maybe, maybe not. In practice I'm not worried about using them in very poor visibility.
