To gillig phantom or not to gillig phantom, that is the question
I found a crazy deal on a 1990 gilig phantom bus, 40+ feet, 7k miles, stripped bare, former emergency response vehicle, tyres look good, started when jumped
My concerns are these
It's huge! Which is also a positive thing
It did get stuck in reverse during the test drive
Is a gillig a good bus to convert? Is a Detroit desiel a good engine?

Post some pictures of it. The stuck in reverse could be a shifter/cable issue. What model engine/trans does it have?

Great find depending on the price and agree on the shifter cable and or adjusting it.
Detroit Diesel..no personal experience but my nephew on the fire dept says most of their rigs have Detroits so that tells me..dependable

neat looking bus!! I remember riding these in the city when we had them.. the transmissions always sounded super cool..
nice that one has already had its seats out and some frame work inside started!..
id be a bit leery of the transmission.. but like others say it could be as easy as a worn or stretched shifter cable / linkage

Only if they sort out and fix the transmission issue.
Might have a lot of idle hours on it but looks like a great stater platform.

How would one determine if it is the shifter cable?

I would think the only way is to get on a creeper with a good flashlight and follow it underneath from the driver's position back to the transmission.
Others on here own Gilligs so they would be able to tell you better.
And they can tell you the makeup of the linkage if an auto or standard transmission. It might be a combination of cables or rods.
That wouldn't scare me from purchasing that bus at all, even for 2g's. That is a lot of bus for the asking price. Don't diddle ....

If it is an Allison transmission, even if the transmission is toast, that is a good price on a GREAT bus. I would not wait very long to purchase it if it has the Allison.
If it has a Voith transmission run away from it as fast as you can. The Voith is not a bad transmission but just try and get parts and service for one if you are not a transit agency.
If it has a ZF transmission I would be more than a little cautious. They are not as hard to find parts and service compared to a Voith. But they are spendy and difficult compared to an Allison.
On thing to consider is the headroom in a Gillig Phantom is inches more than the highest headroom school bus. And on the high floor models like this one there is even some room under the floor for tanks and other house mechanical systems.

Nice bus. Two ways to ID trans: Ask the seller or use a creeper and look/take pictures then post here to see if it can be identified.

Coachwork: Crown, integral. (With 2kW of tiltable solar)
Chassis: Crown Supercoach II (rear engine)
Engine: Detroit 6V92TAC, DDEC 2, Jake brake, Allison HT740
Rated Cap: 37,400 lbs GVWR

It has a Detroit 6V92TA with DDEC II ECM. If it's the 253 HP engine it could have an Allison MT6xx transmission, but if it's the 277 HP engine it should have the big HT740 transmission to cope with the extra torque. If it has a Felsted T-handle shifter it will have half a mile of Morse push-pull cable terminating at a Quadco connector on the side of the transmission. Some Gilligs used an Allison touch-pad shifter or a Stone-Bennett air shifter instead, but then they could be using an electronically-controlled MT or HT transmission.
The 6V92 is a true heavy-duty engine; actually it's classified by the EPA as a heavy heavy-duty engine (it weighs 2100 lbs.). The 6V92 and HT740 combination is what was in Greyhound's MC9s, built by MCI as 3-million-mile buses. They would routinely rack up 100,000 miles a year with GH, then be sold to second-tier operators after ten years of GH revenue service, so a drivetrain like that is good for many hundreds of thousands of miles if cared for and driven correctly. Just DON'T LUG IT and DON'T OVERHEAT IT!
Nice buses, but check for frame cracking. Is that why it's being sold?

Did this bus have a chance to move forward when you saw it?

I drove it round the parking lot four times. The issue came up when I'd engage the air brake, put it into reverse, reverse for a bit and then it was reluctant to go into drive. I moved the shifter through all gears and eventually it shifted into drive again
