Was really cool. I've been in the past but this was my first VW show in 20 years. Its crazy how the hobby is totally different now. What used to be a $500 car is a $6000 "project" now.

Ain't that the truth....$500 to $6000, no more $50. bugs anymore.

All I have left is a wall full of toys and a hood ornament off a '58 beetle.

Isn't it funny how long term VW addiction leads to toy accumulation???

We've only had our '71 Super about a year and a half... I used to have something a lot newer and flashier but this thing is even more charming and a fraction of the price, albeit a little less comfortable...

She needs some work but she's only got 21k original miles... bone stock, OE everything. Tires on it have full tread from 1991. I'm a full time student so I hardly ever get to drive it, nor have money to put into it, but I love this thing, doubt I'll ever part ways with it. I feel like I stole it for $3000.

Used to own a '76 Rabbit that cost me -$400: bought it for $300 and immediately got rear-ended at a stop sign; it was already so banged-up I couldn't tell where the actual damage was, but his insurance totaled it for $700 and let me keep it. It got 40 mpg and lasted me three years and one trip across the country. I am of course lucky to still be alive after driving a car with the structural integrity of a Stouffer's frozen lasagna tray.

This kind of thing is what made $3.35 an hour somewhat bearable.

I bought a low mile 79 diesel Rabbit. Round headlights were pretty spiffy.
4 speed manual. I paid $900 but it looked new. Was a trailer queen used as a toad. Looked and felt new.
That car was amazing.

And NOW for something really different!!

Has anyone ever seen one of these? When I was in Mexico, I saw quite a few of these things running around. They're becoming more and more prolific are starting to show up everywhere. With so many Mexican Beetles running around, I think something like this was only inevitable.

Those go on the Type 1 pan just like a Meyer's Manx would.

Well.... with one of these, you don't have to shorten the pan.

But also, notice the windshield and rear window. They are from the NEW Beetle. Also, there are some that use the headlights and taillights from the NEW Beetle. Look at the blue one second from the top. I agree, one of these would make a fantastic toad.

I was kinda hoping these were based on the classic upright 1600 CC aircooled engine. There were still manufacturing them SOB long after being discontinued here in the States. The lines follow my New Beetle's body styling, so no joy...
I must be a masochist, going from Micro-Busses to a full-blown school bus...
So, they wedded the modern water-jacket to the Type-I pan? Interesting...

That roto-molded body would greatly reduce the load of my toad, not that the bus much notices it now, 'cept on long hill pulls.
Thankfully, on a lot of them, they're not using the POS OEM headlights NBs come with! And am definitely digging the T-Top!
Thanx for sharing the pix of the prettys!

Hey! I have a VW! Finally got my first Beetle after decades of wanting one - it's a 2007 convertible with a few issues, but I love driving it. It's the first car I've had that really felt like 'me', you know? I can't imagine ever wanting a larger car than this again, and am looking forward to towing it around the country behind my skoolie!

Those mexican dealies look like fun too, but do they have windows? Or are they just dune buggies?

2010 NB, here.
Drag her about on a tow dolly. Would've preferred a manual, but bought at a good price from Enterprise, and they only stock auto autos...

They do such a good job with this body that you can't see what the chassis is. But again, this car uses the standard pan from any air-cooled Type 1 (old) Beetle. This is the car that was manufactured beginning in Germany in 1938 and finally ceased production in 2003 in Mexico. So, you can go down SOB, find an old Beetle that has had be dickens beaten out of it, pull the body off and put this body on, and you've got a brand new car. ...sort of. The only exception would be the Super Beetle which has a different front suspension than the standard air-cooled Beetle.

Sadly, they're just dune buggies.

The bonnets look more like a Super Beetle's than a standard Bug's.

you could probably fashion soft windows for it similar to what was used on the "thing" or on a jeep.. at least keep a storm out if you got caught in the rain..
