Weather watching

Weather radios are a good thing, however, I have a Uniden BC340CRS scanner that has AM, FM, weather, as well a being a scanner for police bands and others. The most significant band is the HAM radio.

I listen to 145.490. Whenever there is a storm, the HAM guys get together and give reports from around the area. It is a lot better than your traditional weather radio.

Also, here is a link to a great weather radar site. Click "RADAR" on the top toolbar. On the upper left of the screen there is a zoom function. You can zoom out and see the entire U.S. or zoom in close enough to see street names and buildings. It is similar to Google Earth in that respect. Also, you can click on your mouse and move the map around.

One more thing is that if you listen to the NPR radio station (91.1) where I am, they give frequent weather warnings that are pretty comprehensive.

Last fall when we were cominghome from the coast,there was a major storm sustem covering all of NC heading NE...Lisa had both phones on doppler radar 1 zoomed in to the road we were on and the other zoomed out,radar upadtes where every 10 min or so.....she would say "bad cell" and I would hit next exit and hid on the east side of a large building,
After it passed we'd hit thehiway and see 100's(along our 9hr drive thru hell) of wrecks and cars off the road(normal travel time was about 5 hrs)
Being aware of the weather is a huge advantage!!
A couple years ago,we watched and then evacuated 200yards away to mamaw/papaws basement....tornado hit 1/2hr later 100 yards from were we hunkered down

CB radios as well as scanners often have weather radios built in. Just program in your FIPS code and it will go off when it detects a bad weather signal from the weather station you have programmed in. Of course, if you are travelling, you will need to occasionally adjust the station according to where you are.
