They likely won't care about what it weighs, but what the GVWR is and they will know that from the VIN.

thanks I actually have a picture of the GVWR and sent em that.

its 33,000 which seems high. hoping thats okay without a CDL after converted. I thought I read something that said a GWVR over 26,000 requires CDL...

Many states waive the CDL weight requirement if it's an RV.
I'm sure your build out will not be close to that number

  1. Go weigh your bus at a local CAT scale (truckstops)
  2. Check with YOUR state's DMV for licensing requirements.

If we knew where you are we may be able to give more specific answers. Regulations vary by state.

Perhaps you could fill out your profile?

As far as I know, what your bus weighs has nothing to do with anything. When considering weight rules, the State will go by GVWR, which is the load capacity of the bus. I don't know who to legally change that GVWR on a chassis. Mine weighs 19400, state still says GVWR is 33000.

PS, I forgot I had already posted this info.

Lotf of members have had theirs changed in Florida when converting to RV title. I plan to attempt the same thing.

I don't understand how you can change a manufacturers rating just because you took weigh off. The GVWR is the maximum load that chassis can handle safely, that doesn't change, ever.

I changed mine when I had the 40 footer.

Stuff varies from state to state, office to office, and employee to employee. YMMV.

In South Dakota the cost to license it (license plates and annual tags) varies depending on unloaded weight for RVs - so I made sure to weight it before we got the bed frame and appliances in!!

So I recently learned it's the owner of the chassis that sets the GVWR. So you are correct that when you tell them it is less when you go to rereg.. Your plate will show a 26000+- weight on the tag and that can't be exceeded and costs will be accordingly.
