What is this.
This part on my bus is leaking so I want to replace seals while I can easily get to it. Unfortunately I have no idea what it is to get new seals. Anyone know what it is?

That is an AD-9 air dryer which can be rebuilt with a Haldex part # 107794CX kit.

Is that a rare case? I've had one or two go bad, and they were both replaced. Gave me the impression rebuild wasn't common, or at least not the way to go. And is that something the average person can do?

Getting to be fewer and fewer real mechanics, just parts replacers.

I hear you on that one. Don't have much say when it's not my truck though. Replacement is often faster anyway if a replacement is readily available.

$100-$200 for a replacement depending on brand. Looks like the rebuild kits are about $100.

Another consideration is that there is no warranty on rebuilding an existing unit yourself. A replacement unit will have one.

We rebuild these all the time at our shop. The kit is like $47 but labor costs sometimes outweighs just replacing the entire unit with a spin on filter unit.

O'Reilly auto parts had it for $171. Ordered it online at 10am and the store had it from the warehouse by 2pm.

The air dryer on my Crown was leaking and I went the replacement route. The bus is 24 years old and a new part would be better. When replacing, you need to make sure the new part will mount up to your bus, as direct replacement isn't always feasible. My replacement was one of the house brand parts from Fleetpride.

Take a picture of it and take it to your parts vendor

You have to have some mechanical knowledge to know what part needs changing. IJS 😉
